Our group wants to take our firearms through michigan this year on our way up moose hunting. Could someone with experience in this walk me through the proper steps please?

Cheers!

Is the time saved by going thru the US, including the border stops you'll encounter travelling with firearms, worth it ?

Drive around, go up thru Thunder Bay...

If you've got the paperwork in order, can save ~6 hrs, plus fuel is cheaper in the US. Not sure what they would say if you had beer/alcohol with you.

Actually it really is. Usually one truck and trailer goes the Canadian way with all the firearms, and my truck and trailer goes through the states. We pick up the 5 cases of beer deal at duty free, fill up on cheaper gas, get some groceries, etc etc. It saves a bit of coin going that way, and time, especially since we live in Sarnia (border town)

Our thought was if it wasn't too much of a hassle to cross with our guns, both trucks would take the American way.

Reading the link to the form in this thread it looks like it takes 8 to 10 weeks to process the paperwork anyways, so it looks like one truck will be taking the Canadian way again this year.

If you fax your form in to the BATF and have a fax number for them to send it back to it will probably take a week or less, especially if you attach a cover letter to the fax explaining the time line etc

If you are just traveling through the USA and not hunting there than you just need to buy a hunting license for any state to make it legal to have a firearm. The license doesn't even have to be for the state you are traveling in but has to be bought before entering with the firearm. We usually by a Mich. hunting preserve license for $14 and have had zero problems for years.

...still need the 6NIA

I have done this for 16 years and you do not need a 6NIA unless your destination is some where in the US. If you are just passing through to another Canadian destination all you need is a US hunting license. If you go to the ATF web site and read through the question and answer page there is an example of a Canadian hunter traveling through the US to another Canadian destination. It states this as being an exemption to the 6NIA
I just returned home last week from a fishing trip and had a 12g shotgun with me and no problems.

Just an FYI, make sure that you and your party are admissible to the US. They will likely run a back ground check.

Good to know, thanks.

If you are traveling home with a moose make sure that the spinal cord and the brain are removed before entering the US. We quarter our moose so this not a big deal.

So when you buy hunting license , when you are in United States or here in Canada - Biggs

could you stay for a while with that firearm or just a straight travel?

Awesome answer. I was reading the exemption last night with a couple of guys in my group and we were trying to make sense of it all, and we read that exemption you are talking about. Thanks for the first hand knowledge.

I'll have to check that one out. Seems strange that if one was simply passing through the US that he would need a license of one kind or another.
