Ontario Grouse Hunting with 22 Rifle

I have a 22/20ga savage, best of both worlds. I have my own issues with MNR so don't ask me to explain this one to you, as it defies logic. Just sharing the knowledge.

Now there's a law that needs to be brought up to speed. Or perhaps I should start a "17HMR for Bear Defence?" thread, or send the MNR a note asking if we could legally hunt deer, bear and moose with our .17 rimfires! Heaven forbid if someone takes a .22Mag/20 ga Savage 24 into the woods after Fall Bear opens up....

PS. I'm all for using a .22 for grouse when and where the birds cooperate, though nothing beats dropping a flying bird with a nice shot from a light double shotgun.

Yes, I too have recently picked up a 22LR/20ga Savage, which offers a bit of the best of both worlds, though I think I still hit clays and birds better with my 20 ga SxS.

Incidentally, you just reminded me that years ago, when the MNR put out a two booklet series on safe hunting practices (before the mandatory safety course), they included a section that explained the merits of a .22/20 ga for grouse. The booklet said that it was very popular in regions of Northern Ontario where one might get off a ground shot on a tame grouse, followed by a chance to shoot at it again or another bird close by that might flush after hearing the .22 barrel go off. I was immediately hooked on getting a Savage 24, but it took over 20 years before I got one in .22/20 ga.
