Ontario hunt camp location?

Blargon, those places are exactly what I would like, little more then we want to spend but that's the area I like. I'll see what the others think.

That was just a 10 minute search. with a little more effort and calling some of the local real estate brokers, you might find what you are looking for.

Beware of land with no road access, access over crown, or a small parcel/camp surrounded by crown, as we are unsure right now how the Algonquin land claim will affect access to these lands.

You may want to write in up keep, work week, guests, family members uses, how disputes are handled, who looks after paying bills/keeps books, when are camp dues due, elect a trustee and if camp is on leased land you will have restrictions who can own it and how it can be used. Some members say they are on a hoildays when at camp and a clean camp to one is not the same to others. You will have workers, slackers, bullies, a holes and friends that turn into fighters. Than the wives get involved and it becomes a headache with many sleepless nights. You will have lots of break in's and you should have all this written up by a lawyer, copies to each menber with yearly meetings. Buy a tent.
Yes road access is great until it washes out in the spring and no one is going to repair it. Happened three times and is costly. If a remote location leaving vehicle unattended a long time can cause problems to your vehicle, we had window broken everything stolen and and old dead battery left beside our vehicle. I can give you many more headaches.

We are not trying to talk you out of this whole venture just help you out a little by giving you the facts many of us learned the hard way. If your anything like the rest of us who have been there and done that, this is something you just have to do because you always wanted to do it. So proceed as you see fit armed with all the little bits of advice we have given you. If your anything like me you don't really believe you can have the issues we have spoken of until they actually happen. But they will. I hope you all have understanding wives as your going to need them, as her new washer and dryer and next years winter vacation in Cuba are about to get invested in a hunt camp. Good luck in this venture, and all the best. We all do understand it is something you just have to do.

Now that I've done it and to some extent still doing it. Given the chance to do it over I would never, never, never, never, ever contemplate doing it again. If I took the time and money invested I could hunt with Jim Shocky every year for the rest of my life and still have money left over.

Well we had the first meeting last night and went pretty well. Set up a rough rules and laws for membership, we still need a few more meetings to plan out all the ideas and what not.

I hear all your warnings and am proceeding with caution!

I would like to hear from guys up a little north of North Bay( Martin River, Temagami River area), I have fished there a bunch but never hunted there. What is the moose and grouse hunting like there?

I've hunted there since I was 10 years old and I dont think spening 80,000$ for a camp in this area is worth it. I mean the hunting is decent but not worth that much money and time in my opinion. Personally I only hunt grouse around here and I go elsewhere for deer/moose. Good luck!

Marten River isn't where you want according to your "list", (not to mention that most of the surrounding area east of Hwy 11 is in the Nipissing Crown Game Preserve) and, imo, neither is most of Temagami. There are some decent whitetail spots south and west - over towards the west side of Lake Wanapitei, but north of there, up towards the Montreal River and west from there, you'll find moose, no problem, and some years bear is good, but not whitetails. You'll find Fool Hen all over the place, but ruffies only in certain spots.

Plus, unless you're canoeing in, or doing fly-in, access can be difficult if not impossible - the forestry roads are all that goes in there, most places, if there is even any of those in the parts you might be interested in.

10-4, My preference would be to head up north further. Possibly Chapleau as I know the hunting is decent there but I'm the only one that wants to go further north.

I'm not to concerned about deer(should have put that in my first post) because we have lots out my back door, would just be nice to have them in an addition. For me moose, bear and grouse are my biggest wants.

So the Martin and Temagami are not great choices, what about an hour either north or west of Sudbury? Again fished there plenty but never hunted.

Well, certainly for moose and bear, the areas north-east up the Wanapitei River would get you what you want. Again though, not a lot of ruffies, mostly Spruce grouse. I have bounced some ruffies along the West Branch of the Spanish River, south of Biscotasi Lake, and good for moose and bear along there too.

Good country for both off Hwy. 144, between Gogama and Timmins as well, but too far up for ruffies, as far as I know. Certainly I've never taken any there myself.

Getting an adult tag there will be very difficult. Be prepared to go many years in between adult tags unless you can muster a very large group of pool one hunters (10+). So if hunting calves is OK with you, then by all means go for it.

There will be plenty of grouse and bear though.

Areas 29, 39, 40 and 41 all need around 12-13 hunters for a guaranteed adult moose tag. Those are the areas around/near Gogama. Moose numbers vary with most of the moose being found where access is limited.
