OPP seeking info after hunting dog found shot, buried in Algonquin Park

Ted Raymond
3:22 PM

The Ontario Provincial Police are asking for information after a dog was found buried in Algonquin Park on Monday.

The Killaloe OPP got the call when someone found the dog, which had been shot in the head. The dog was wearing an electronic deer-tracking collar.

Police say the area where the dog was found was a game preserve, where hunting is prohibited.

Anyone with information is asked to call OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

So sorry to hear about your hound. What ####### would shoot a dog in the first place. Have to be real scum of the earth to do that. Hope they can find this person and are charged to the fullest extent.

We run hounds at the camp.... our dogs are very well behaved and always stay on our territory.... Unfortunately there is another group that does a run near us and every year they end up losing two or three dogs that wind up on our property, pisses me off.... Every year I stumble across them or they come out to me on a run and every year I tie the buggers up, give them water and feed them until the owners come looking for them... Any a-hole that would shoot a dog deserves more than I am willing to say on this site.... I hope they find them and hang them by the nads for a week pending trial.....

Was the dog loose on the game preserve, or shot elsewhere and moved there?

In some areas of the province hunting with hounds is an accepted method with much tradition behind it. In other areas, dogs are prohibited from running loose and owners are responsible to keep them restrained on their own property. I know of a couple dogs being shot on an adjoining large tract of private land. There is an established deer hunting camp with 15-20 members and the dogs were shot while running loose and chasing deer on their private property.

Too bad about your pooch... I have always had hunting dogs and I know the amount of work that goes into training them and how attached you can get to them... they just work their heart out for you.

Hoyt

You can't shoot a dog whether it"s on your private land or not, that is just a way to get into a lot of trouble.

I didn't say that you can shoot a dog... you don't read very well... I said I know of two dogs being shot.

I read very well, also between the lines.

I think you are reading in too much...... no offence meant......

From what I know of Hoyt's character, he is likely of the same mind as me and would never shoot a dog....... I will also hazard a guess that he is like me in that he would be pissed off if a careless and selfish dog owner ruined his hunt.....

Believe me..... this year when I had to wrangle up the other party's dogs, I treated the dogs like kings....... like I treat my own..... Their owners, however, may be still suffering psychologically from the reaming I gave them......

Not sure about Ont. but in BC if any dog is harassing livestock, landowners are allowed to shoot them.

That applies to landowners,ONLY and harassment must be demonstrable or the SHTF. This kind of crap sickens me. My sincerest condolences to 88man.

It is crap, whoever did that needs to be found out and prosecuted.

However you need to Read the act.

“It actually says ‘any person,’ it doesn’t necessarily limit it to the farmer. The definition of ‘injury’ is quite broad, too. It would include just pursuing or worrying the livestock or poultry ... It also includes just being on the farm where the livestock is kept. A farmer wouldn’t necessarily have to wait until any damage was done. It’s written fairly broadly so that any person can take a fairly extreme measure to kill the animal to protect the livestock.”

•Does the law provide a loophole for dog haters?

“Ultimately, (this case in East Gwillimbury) could go to court if there was a dispute (over whether) the animal was legally destroyed or shot. But the wording is clear that there’s an intention there to provide a fairly high degree of discretion on behalf of the farmer to protect the livestock and shoot or kill the dog. If the animal is shot ... the animal wouldn’t be able to remain there to suffer, the person would have to finish the job, so to speak, in a fairly quick fashion.”

•Do owners have to kill their pets if a dog attacks a neighbour’s farm animals?

“There is a statutory requirement in the legislation for the dog to be destroyed within 48 hours. If a dog is involved in killing livestock and the owner learns about it, they are actually obligated to have their dog put down. Even if the farmer doesn’t want it. If they don’t do it, they can be charged and convicted of a provincial offence. The penalty is ridiculously low — $50. I’ve never heard of it happening.”

I let a male and female go about 1pm last Friday afternoon. They circled around for a bit and went north to the hydro lines. We just sat till dark.We did hear a shot or 2 to the north but never pay any attention being out of or area we hunt.At dark me and buddy went looking for the 2 hounds. The female was on her way back to camp when caught but the signal from the male was bouncing all over the place. We tried for couple hrs calling and driving around to get a good signal but couldn't so figured he's not far from camp and just resting for the night.Went back early Saturday morn and same again with signal. We drove around to find the strongest signal and started walking. We found a place where someone had been sitting deer hunting and about 5ft from there was his grave ! We did everything we could but knew one of the shots we heard the afternoon before was his kill shot.He was shot point blank range and there was gun power burns on the back of his head.He came out to the guy that was hunting illegally in the game preserve and rather than call me he shot him.Don't know what else to say other than he shouldn't have been there hunting and I tried to get him out as fast as I could.####### and hope he gets caught !
