I'm looking at getting my H1. I have my PAL but I didn't do the firearms course, I just challenged the test.

Do I need to do the firearms course for a test I've already passed??? I won't have to rewrite the test or anything, what proof will I be given that I did the course??

Hunting course is different than the PAL course.

My understanding is that you have to take the hunter safety course and pass the test, all of it, including the firearms components. You can't challenge the hunting test unless you have a a license from another province.

Firearms test is totally different then hunting test.

You can do your hunting course and exam without having even seen a gun.

I understand that I will have to pass the Hunter Safety Course, I was under the understanding that the only difference between an H1 and an H2 is that the applicant has a PAL.

I'm just not sure if I have to actually do the firearms safety course AND the hunter safety course in order to get my H1, I already have a PAL so it makes things more complicated.

OK. You should only have to do the hunter safety course since you already have the PAL. I know most instructors run "One Stop Course" which includes both hunting and the PAL. The courses are given as two distinct programs so you should be able to just attend the hunting one.

Check out this website. It may answer your questions

H2 is the tuned down version for BOW hunters.
No sence learning about guns if your only bow hunting

If you take the full hunting course and do not have a PAL they will issue you a H2 card. When you provide proof of passing the firearms course they will issue you a H1.

Read the regs and comprehend

Yep - thats what I did. It was supposed to be a Friday night/Sat/Sun deal. I showed up at 2ish Saturday afternoon and just took the hunting part of it. Then its just the written exam, no practical cause I already had my PAL. Hopefully it hasnt changed too drastically over the last 2 years or so.

I just got my H1 a few months ago. I already had my PAL. The instructer wanted proof that I had taken and passed the CFSC (not just challanged the exam) before he would sign me off on the Hunter Ed. If I had not been able to provide proof of taking the CFSC, then I would have to do the firearm portion of the Hunter Safety one stop program even though I had my PAL.

Wow  things sure have changed.

I always assumed one had nothing to do with the other.

Must investigate.

I know my kids could just take their hunting course. Later when they were old enough they could take their PAL and get their H1.

You shouldn't have to prove nothing to the instructor, that is an MNR issue( I think)

From the regs
If a new applicant does not have one of the pieces of accreditationlisted above, a hunting version Outdoors Card is now issued based onthe exam(s) the applicant has passed. To obtain an H1 hunting version Outdoors Card, the applicant must provide proof (an original or certified copy) of passing BOTH the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam

An Ontario Hunter Education Exam Report indicating a
pass issued to you after January 1, 2006, plus proof of
passing the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam.

Notice you only have to prove to the goverment that you passed the exams

I think your instructor was using tactics to force people to buy his services.

This is from my gun club.

same here. He wanted proof that I had taken (and passed) the firearms course. Took my hunters ed and skipped the firearms stuff.

You can take your H2 as the hunting course has nothing to do with the firearms course. Then go to the city (or wherever) and have it upgraded to H1. In theory you don't even need to tell your instructor you will be hunting with a gun. Don't see why one would do that tho, kinda pointless.

This is the exact problem I've been having.

So if you go get your H2, and I bring my PAL with me they'll give me an H1?

I quote again

I think Sunray said it best.

There are a lot of examiners which think they have God like status.

Just got of the phone with my gun club. They said you can take your hunting course anytime, nothing to do with PAL.

They said you would not be allowed to use or borrow a firearm and all you would have to do later is get your PAL to move up to a H1.

Your instructors a douchebags

Our local CO believes you do. This is in response to some one moving to Thunder bay and asking if they have to take the course:

MNR Response:
If you can show proof of hunting (licence) from another jurisdiction (Alberta) where you were a resident or proof of having passed a hunter safety course from another jurisdiction, you would be allowed to challenge the Ontario Hunter Safety Course exam without having to take the course. If you passed the exam, you would be issued a H1 or H2 Outdoor card six months after the day you moved to Ontario. If you did not pass the exam on the first try, you would be required to take the course.

Reference: Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act 1997, Ontario Regulation 665/98 (Hunting)

I was also asked if I took the CFSC or challenged the exam when asking if I could just attend the hunting portion of the one-stop course.

Why add unnecessary barriers to getting new hunters into the sport!?!
