Seeing as those of us that hunted with tags will have to do mandatory reports soon, I was forwarded this information today. I dont keep up to speed on the Environmental Bill of Rights where these are posted and this one has passed through without many comments

You may be interested to read the Environmental Registry decision notice about "Financial penalties for failing to submit a mandatory hunter report" - see link
below (ERO# 019-3977)

The two important points of the notice are:

The regulation was filed by the Registrar of Regulations on November 26, 2021 and will come into force on March 1, 2022 ahead of the spring 2022
hunting seasons.

The $25 penalty amount is intended to offer a moderate, balanced approach to promote compliance. The existing prevent-from-purchase penalty is
maintained to apply for a second consecutive offence for each species as part of the graduated penalty framework.

I was surprised by the small number of comments, but they were interesting to read!

just another reason people will not buy tags I know guys who are deer hunting and bear hunting don't buy the tag until they shoot something. only reason they don't buy is they hate filling out the report.

If that's your reason for not buying tags you deserve to lose your license for life.

It's pretty hard to understand the mindset of a loser who would complain about this. We have such a thing here in Sask, and it probably takes less than 2 minutes to fill out online. Do survey, and no financial penalty.

While it sounds like it would work.
We know in reality this form of punishment will not stop the poachers.
I too received a hunting survey this week with a self addressed return envelope.
I'll get it sorted out in the next day or two.

I recall reading something from SERM this fall where they were proposing if you did not do the survey by a certain date there would be a penalty. I believe it said $20 and/or loss of being able to apply for tags the following season until the survey is completed? Personally I find the surveys kind of a joke. You'd have to keep a journal to answer them with any degree of accuracy when they ask questions like which WMZ's did you hunt, how many days in each, how many hours each day etc.... I hunt almost every day from Sept waterfowl opener to the last day of deer season and don't keep a journal. I've no idea how many hours or total days I hunt or in which WMZ on a given day...then there is my favorite question "were you successful?"

Agreed. I answered to the best of my ability but completely forgot I was expected to keep a diary. I have little kids, a farm, business owner ect. You think I know which days I was able to sneak away for a few hours in the am or before dusk? Got invited out to different camps. 4 different Wmu for deer alone.

Strange, my survey only asked for total number of days I hunted, not exact days. I did it online, took two minutes, really not a difficult thing at all.

I find your reply kind of a joke, since they don't ask for that kind of detail.

But people love to complain about anything. Why would you want to take 2 minutes to give the MNR a small bit of information so they can make better decisions?
At least your not a low life poacher like the guy above posted about his friends who won't even buy a tag due to this huge burden put on them.

People never cease to amaze me. Or I guess disappoint me.

I just filled mine out. Yes they do ask for that kind of detail.

I see you live in Ontario, maybe your surveys are different.

Screw that. MY time. Those pricks can pay me for it, ask politely, or get bent.

My tag buying is on hold until these goobers grow a brain.

The other option is to double the price of the tags in order to pay for the extra staff required to do the job to garner the same information.

The Ontario deer reporting questions are super easy and quick, I don't get the complaining. I still think the data they get is flawed. I mean I've hunted with friends 100 yards away I see nothing, yet they see 10 or more deer same day/property.

Mandatory Deer Hunter
1. Did you hunt for deer?
2. Did you use the deer tag that came with your license for a harvested deer - no matter who shot the deer?
3. On what date was the deer harvested?
4. In what WMU was the deer harvested?
5. Was the deer a male or female?
6. Was the deer an adult or fawn?
7. Did you purchase any additional deer tags?
8. In how many WMUs did you hunt deer?
9. 1.1: WMU hunted
10. 1.2: Number of days hunted in this WMU?
11. 1.3: Number of live deer seen in this WMU?
12. 1.4: Number of live wolves/coyotes seen in this WMU?

Mandatory Spring Wild Turkey Hunter
1. Did you hunt for wild turkey in spring
2. Did you use your spring tag for a harvested turkey?
3. In how many WMUs did you hunt wild turkey in spring?
4. 1.1: WMU Hunted?
5. 1.2: Number of days hunted in this WMU?
6. 1.3: Number of live turkeys seen in this WMU while hunting in spring?

No. Gouging people who might depend on the meat they harvest is not an answer. Neither is twisting their arm and making them jump through hoops.

Vast majority of hunters and outdoorsmen out there are great, conscientious people, who will go out of their way to help. The MNR is being as lazy in their application of haphazard mandates as the scumbag health officials are with their vax mandates.

Ask me. Convince me. Buy me in. I'd love to help.

Try and force me though, and I'll go out of my way to throw sand in the gearbox.

*Christmas is going too smooth. I don't have any relatives to argue with this year, and Christmas isn't Christmas without something to butt heads about, eh :)

They do in Alberta where I live. You have to check off every WMZ you've hunted in, number of days, hours you hunted. Obviously you dont live in AB or hunt waterfowl or game birds?

What lesson does this send to my kids?

Hey kids, we do this to pitch in and help support this system of ours. Or,

Hey kids, we do this or we get punished.

Small-minded, short-sighted, self-defeating over-regulation by petty tyrants with more power than they are capable of wielding. The difference between teaching someone what is good, and putting a gun to their head and saying, "This or else!"
