Ontario Minor's Hunting Permit

Hi everyone,

I looked all over the web and couldn't seem to dig up anything solid regarding the process of getting a hunting outdoors card as a 15 year old. I figured the kind folks on CGN could help me out here and I'm hoping that this is the right place to ask. From what I understand, one would need to pass the Ontario Hunter's Education course and send in an application. Where it gets confusing is figuring out all of the permission forms that are needed. The course that is offered in my area is the "one stop" course which apparently covers all of the material for obtaining both a PAL and a hunting outdoors card, however the permission form that I found online: (ht tp://www.ohep.net/GetPDF.cfm?ID=HuntEdProFormEN.pdf) only seems to cover the Ontario Hunter's Education course and the turkey hunting course. My question is whether or not I would be able to attend the one stop course with this form filled out. My second question is regarding the Wild Turkey course - is the procedure the same as the other course, and is one eligible at the age of 15? Why is it separate from the standard course?

Yes, that form is all you need... parental consent is required at 15 but not 16... there is a loop hole in the firearms regulations regarding hunting in Ontario... technically you must be 18 to possess a firearm and be issued a PAL, however Ontario regulations allow you to hunt on your own at 15 with parental consent and on your own at 16... when my kids were teenagers I sought clarification on this and was told that provincial jurisdiction "overlooked" the firearms act as it pertained to minors hunting... we went with that, although it always sounded sketchy to me... not sure what the RCMP's take on it would be?

The turkey course is separate because it was a joint project between the MNR and wildlife organizations (OFAH)... and the negotiations included the mandatory education (safety) course as delivered by the OFAH.
