Ontario Moose second allocation surplus tags

Second allocation tags in today (August 1)
Pulled a cow, so we now have a Bull & cow

No luck for me or my girlfriend. Haven't talked to anyone else in my hunting party yet but I'm hoping someone managed to get a cow/calf tag to supplement our bull tag.

I pulled a bull tag. Likely won’t take it and start building points. Group already has a cow/calf and bull tag. We applied way up in the middle of no where. Most of us are use to hunting from a camp, or at least motel/lodge. This should be a experience

I drew a calf tag with my third choice. Will wait and see how group fared as a whole before deciding on whether to claim it. Hoping for a bull tag next year!

Can I apply multiple times, for points only?

IE: in the primary, I can select choices. This year I chose 2 (my preferred hunt in my preferred WMU) and applied directly for a point in both stages. Could I have made all 3 choices in each stage, WMU 99Z (the "apply directly for point" choice) and gotten 3 points per stage for that?

Same here. We have 8 guys,no tags and haven't had since 2013. There was another adult tag reduction in WMU 50 again this year. This new system will effectively shut the area down, permanently.

With 1900 guys last year looking for 20 tags the odds are not in favor of drawing one. You needed a couple more hunters for a minimum group size I guess. Some would have found a couple of phantom hunters to boost the numbers.

10 guys in our moose camp in WMU 50. No tags. 6 years without an adult tag. Cant even go in the bush this year.

8 man camp here in 60. 0 tags even with 19 points as a top entry. It’s been a 15 years since our last adult tag. This will be the first time since pre WWII nobody can hunt from our multi generational camp. Sucks when traditions come to an end.

Did any in your group apply for a calf tag?

Yes. We knew going in it would be rough as some of the camps we talk to have people with max points. Have to see how things work out over the next few years but based on the usual number of applicants vs the number of tags it’s not promising.

Group allocation is over with the new system. Everything hinges on individual eligibility and tag availability in each WMU. The less Moose in an area, the more tags that are issued. Essentially,if you decide to hunt in an area where there aren't any Moose, you can get all sorts of tags. That concept doesn't seem to have occurred to hunters, yet. :bangHead:
