Hi,

Does anyone hunt moose in WMU 25? And/Or, does anyone know any information on this WMU?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I spent 10 years at Detour Lake gold mine(approx 120 m.north of Cochrane Ont.}I believe this road is the only access that isnt gated. The only hunting I did was packing my rifle while traveling into or out of the mine..We shot a nice bull one year near the Katawagami River.I've often thought about planning a hunt for up there since I live close(near Kapusking)Theres lots of cutover ares and lots of water hunting oppertunites.I believe this unit opens early also.If you have Google earth pro online, that will give you lots of info.About thirty miles or so into the unit it starts to flatten out into muskeg country. There's also a good pop. of woodland Caribou as we used to see lots.I hope this helps a bit.

I spoke with a CO in Hearst yesterday and he said I could access this WMU from there. He mentioned that there were 2 roads going in from Hearst.
He said there was alot of Muskeg and there was some cut areas from previous logging operations.
This would be our first time hunting there, but it looks promising. Are there areas there where we can set-up our camp? How's the moose populations? I'm assuming that it's so close to Hearst, there must me moose there?
(We've been hunting around Sudbury area the last couple years, but it's very hard to get tags. Before that, we hunted in Caramat/Longlac area and had good success)

"...where we can set-up our camp?..." If it's privately owned land you will need written premission from the landowner to be there. Any flat spot on Crown land should be ok as long as it's not leased to a logging or mining company. They don't own the land, but don't want anybody getting hurt. Either you or the employees.

The CO told me it's ALLLL crown land up there. So no need for permissions. I'm getting the feeling it's not currently logged up there right now...but I'm sure that can change.
Based on what I'm hearing, access is very limited. So, in saying that, I was basically wondering if we can access a decent spot for our camp via trucks....or do we need ATV's to be able to move around...

I shot a 54" bull Thanksgiving weekend in that unit. It was a fly-in trip through Hearst Air Service. :D We could have filled our Bull tag 4 times in three days.

Well that's GREAT news!! So there's definately moose in that WMU. How far north were you?
