Ontario precision rifle courses?

Www.Osacanada.ca has a 5 day precision shooting course in the summer run by Keith Cunningham and Linda Miller - fantastic course. Up in the Haliburton area

ORA has a course they run on 5 Saturdays over the winter with the last day of the course ending in June at the 1000 yard range at Borden. The other days are in Hamilton combination of classroom and indoor shooting range - again very good course

I've done both the OSA (actually MilCun) and the ORA courses, both are excellent with very good instructors.

The MilCun facilities are awesome, and there is more shooting on the MilCun course, including shooting at gongs and other reactive targets at 600M which I have not been able to try anywhere else. The MilCun course is 5 contiguous days of sustained learning and practicing so you are "focusing on performance" for the whole week.

On the ORA course the last session is at CFB Borden so you get to shoot on a military range. The classroom and indoor practice are at Burlington which is a 50 yard range but they make good use of it for fitting rifles, getting familiar with scope adjustments (including wind which is created by the instructors) and other prep work.

You can't go wrong with either one of these, if you are interested in long range shooting and can afford the time and fees I highly recommend both.

As is usually the case with courses the more you can do to prepare yourself and your equipment, ammunition, etc. the better. I believe the requirement at MilCun is a rifle, bipod, scope and ammunition that will shoot a 1" group at 100 yards.

At the MilCun course there is some support available for equipment issues but it is always better to come prepared for anything, I took lots of ammunition and a spare rifle + scope.

For both courses a spare brain will be needed for when yours overfills.

Two thumbs up for Keith Cunningham and Linda Miller as well, if you are in mosquito season bring a mesh head cover at the very least. I think Keith and Linda breed the mosquitos especially to add to the challenge.... :D

+1 for Milcun. Keith and Linda are amazing. World class instruction. If I had a spare $800, I would do it again. Some of the best learning I have ever had the pleasure of doing. I was there during Deer Fly Season, SO GOOD!!

There's also TDSA and Tactical Teacher (both on this forum under Firearms Training). I have no first hand experience with either (yet), but everyone appears to come away learning lots and, in the case of Tactical Teacher, laughing lots.

I think the best learning environment is one that the student enjoys and has a little fun. The lessons will last a lifetime when you can connect them to something else - unique personality is important trait of any teacher.

The great thing in Ontario is we have at least 4 or 5 EXCELLENT (teaching - scratch that!) LEARNING venues...and a guy or gal with the interest might want to exploit them all if time permits,

I am familiar with Tactical Teacher, Keith and Linda, and the ORA team and can say I would be proud to claim any of them as my shooting "alma mater"

Well, looks like Keith and Linda at Milcun couldn't be commended anymore... BUT I would also like to add my name to their list of recommendations. I enjoyed the rifle class a few years back (even the deer flies weren't that bad at the time) and the operational pistol class. Both these were a "week" long each and the enjoyment and instruction I took away with me is a pleasant chapter in my life, one which I'd happily repeat(with accumulated experience).

Once I get the confirmed dates from the ORA program experts I can see about a PR Clinic at Base Borden and of course I am always down for Base Petawawa for another two day PR clinic. :)

Stay tuned for another season of stale jokes!

Cheers, Barney

Looking forward to the stale jokes and a PR clinic(s) at Borden. Even the experienced shooters should participate...there are basic principles that must be re-visited and reinforced. Clinics are perfect for improving skills, and helping the new guys.

Barney,

Might you have any interest in running a clinic at Connaught?

Scott

I would love to. Just got to find space in the calendar. Speaking of calendar, I'm still waiting to hear back from the ORA Executive regarding the range bookings for PR matches, then I can get a more serious commitment back to you.

For the CFB Borden ORA sponsored PR clinic(s), I cannot take any names or monies until I cement down some dates on the calendar. So I need to ensure all is booked and good to go before we start the registration process. :D

In the meantime, I'm committed to the CFB Petawawa dudes / PR shooters since bookings are easily made over there at surprisingly short notice.

Here's a photo from the 07-08 Sep 2013 Petawawa PR clinic last fall;

Stay tuned folks!

We are gonna have a great season!

Now to start booking up the PR and/or M14 and / or CQB clinics/events up in CFB Petawawa....

Then I gotta look at my calendar for road trips across the country! :D

Cheers and keep helping the noobs around here!

I'd love to attend another one of your PR clinics. I had a blast last time in pet. One at Borden would be a big bonus!
