Ontario propose cormorants hunt in 2019

Off Manitoulin Island on one of the rocky islands the cormorants used to nest in the hundreds ,it was pointless shooting them so the sailors used to raid the nests and boil the eggs a couple minutes then return them to the nests. The birds would waste the summer sitting on eggs that would never hatch. This was back in my Grandpa's days.

As someone who fishes and hunts around the great lakes and especially the Grand River, I'd love to do my part making a small dent in those damn things. Sounds like a decent proposition to me.

The Cormorant Recipe comes from a bygone era: Countryman's Cooking, by W.M.W Fowler circa 1965.

Having shot your cormorant, hold it well away from you as you carry it home; these birds are exceedingly verminous and the lice are said to be not entirely host-specific. Hang up by the feet with a piece of wire, soak in petrol and set on fire. This treatment both removes most of the feathers and kills the lice.

When the smoke has cleared away, take the cormorant down and cut off the beak. Send this to the local Conservancy Board who, if you are in the right area, will give you 3/6d or sometimes 5/- for it. Bury the carcase, preferably in a light sandy soil, and leave it there for a fortnight. This is said to improve the flavour by removing, in part at least, the taste of rotting fish.

Dig up and skin and draw the bird. Place in a strong salt and water solution and soak for 48 hours. Remove, dry, stuff with whole, unpeeled onions: the onion skins are supposed to bleach the meat to a small extent, so that it is very dark brown instead of being entirely black.

Simmer gently in seawater, to which two tablespoons of chloride of lime have been added, for six hours. This has a further tenderising effect. Take out of the water and allow to dry, meanwhile mixing up a stiff paste of methylated spirit and curry powder. Spread this mixture liberally over the breast of the bird.

Finally roast in a very hot oven for three hours. The result is unbelievable. Throw it away. Not even a starving vulture would eat it.

Oh man...my mouth was watering. This sounds just like mom used to make.

hahahahahaaa i'm still laughing Eating a Fishduck !

my friend usta tell me the recipe
boil the Fduck in water for 15 min and dump out water
boil the Fduck in water for another 15min and dump out water
now put the Fduck on a cedar plank and put butter n onions on it, then roast it in the oven for an hour

when its done ... dump the Fishduck in the garbage and eat the cedar plank ! the duck is unedible

If we eradicated the passenger pigeon, how much harder can it be to rid the world of these critters?

Actually, here in Ontario they were nearly wiped out and have made a comeback since stricter pollution control was put in place. The high number of cormorants is a sign that water quality and baitfish populations have improved significantly in the Great Lakes.

I did some reading on these birds a few weeks back and studies showed they actually had little impact on fish populations in the Great Lakes. They sort of rotate through different species of fish as they become available in shallower water higher or in the water column due to migration, spawning, or water temperature throughout the year. The percentage of fish eaten was quite low when compared to what gamefish eat so there's not as much competition as some anglers believe. The biggest issue with them is how large colonies destroy nesting areas.

Personally, I will now be taking my shotgun out on Erie and Ontario for some legal target shooting. There's no better way to brush up on your shooting skills in real waterfowl hunting conditions.

My place on Lake of the Woods has a point they use as a flyby.
Got flocks of them going by like clockwork.

And when I was young and into my teens there were none.
I remember seeing one for the first time and thought it was a goose...
I remember seeing four. And the next year a dozen or so. Now there are thousands.
They were killed off on LOTW, poisoned I think. Which can easily be done as they inhabit particular islands.

It would be pretty easy to cruise around those islands and have at it as they take off.
