now before i get yelled at i did the searching but i am still totally confused

ok so :

scenario one:

i have a restricted license but do not belong to a club yet, can i purchase a handgun yet? or do i need to be a member first. also it would be from canadaammo so it would be shipped to my door, so i shouldnt need a ATT right?

scenario 2

same as 1 but can i have it in my house without being a member to a club, like just having it, like a collector without collector status. i just dont know how long i can have it while all the documents go through for the club

Scenario 3

same as above but can i just have it in a safe without being a member to a club

No. And they will tell you that you need to be a member of a club. There is NO legal requirement for you to have to be member of a club, but unfortunately the firearms act gives the CFO powers to make up it's own rules.

That's about it.

The CFO has to approve the transfer of all restricted and prohibited firearms. CFC Miramichi takes the information, but the file goes to the CFO for approval. To get a transfer completed, it will have to be done their way.

The CFO is in Orillia, north of Barrie, not in OPP headquarters, though.

If the firearm is shipped to you by a courier, they will deliver it to your home, and you will not need an ATT. But don't worry about a short term ATT to take possession of the pistol. This will be issued for the asking, if it is necessary, once the transfer has been approved.

You will need club affiliation and access to an approved range to shoot your pistol. You might as well join a club, and go through whatever process is required for the club to recommend an ATT be issued.

There are hoops through which you must jump. The sooner you start the process, the sooner it will be complete.

this is why the government is stupid, they make it easier to buy an illegal firearm than a legal one, no doubt i could get one off the street in a few days but it will take me 5 months to get one legally. heads up their ass

The company transporting the pistol will have a business licence which authorizes them to convey firearms for business purposes. Don't worry about a short term ATT. This is simply not an issue.

*lol*

The firearm has to be registered regardless and a restricted goes to the CFO for processing.

Don't worry about the club issue. You can say that you are checking out a couple of clubs but have not decided which one to join yet.

I was able to acquire a few restricteds without belonging to a club.

ya sorry, i forgot ya it gets registered, but theres no problem with ordering it and having it delivered and then lockin it in a safe, mainly theres a nice deal and i would like to take advantage before its gone. and i dont have 5 months to wait for a membership

Dont want to hyjack the thread, but I purchased last week a brand new handgun, I also belong to a club. If I switch clubs before the transfer gets finalized, will that cause any issues?

It shouldn't, it actually has nothing to do with your club. They just want to make sure you are a member of a club, they don't contact them or anything. So when you did the transfer and told them about your club (if they asked) thats it, they have just confirmed you belong to a club...the rest has nothing to do with the club. (Did I say the word "club" enough :) )

Order the gun. The seller will contact the CFC to start the transfer. You will likely have to speak to the CFO before the transfer is approved and completed. Once the transfer is approved, the firearm will be shipped to you. It may well be delivered to you, and you won't have to go and pick it up. Admire it, clean it, put a locking device on it, lock it in a container. You will not be able to remove it from your house without an ATT. To get a target shooting ATT, the club will have to send in a recommendation that an ATT be issued. Once you have your ATT, maintain your club membership. If you drop out of the club, the club will inform the CFO, and your ATT will be cancelled.

I purchased from Target Sports Center in Gromley .. seems there isn't too much paperwork; if any, that I need to do as its from a store. I can also save myself some shipping fees so we have worked out getting an ATT (which they will file for) for me to go up and bring it home. Also, EESA wont be holding another ATT course till the end of Jan? RATS :) OH well, I knew I would be waiting a long time before I could pull the trigger ..

... is it Janurary yet?

tiriaq- you are my hero, you answered all my uncertainties, and thanks again to everyone that responded, sorry for such redundant question but i wanted to make sure because these are all legalities and i dont like messing them up.

thanks again!

and no worries on the thread jack, aslong as you get all the answers then we all win :)

Didn't read the whole thing so if this is covered NP...

You can purchase it but you will not be able to get it home...

The CFO's policy (not the CFC's) is that you need to belong to a club in order the have a restricted transfered to you.. So there will be no ATT until after the transfer takes place...

There are individuals who can get restricted transfered without a club membership but they have jumped through the CFO's hurdles.. Those folks are registered as collectors...
Basically since you cannot discharge a restricted except where the CFO says (and those places are ranges) he believes his reason is sound.

Hands down, need to be part of a club or a collector. this came from the cfc today when i called, they said they wouldnt approve my transfers till i had a membership number

Pure BS. I've bought 2 restricteds in the last 2 weeks. Never heard from the CFO and I was never asked for a membership #. When I was placing my order over the phone with the stores, they simply asked what club I belonged to. I said "I'm joining CRAFM". I only officially become a member a week after the guns and reg certs were in my hand.

Only when you request an ATT will they actually ask for proof of club membership.

I'm in Ontario.
