Ontario rules for bringing son hunting ?

My 19 year old son has completed his PAL , RPAL and Hunting Ed course.
We are waiting for his application to be completed by the CFC, they had it since the last week in July.
His credit card was charged but its still not even started to be processed.
Its looking like the PAL wont be here in time for the November rifle season.
He cant get his gun hunting outdoors card until the PAL arrives.

What rules must we follow if he comes on the deer hunt with me ?

Can I let him carry one gun between us and shoot ?

He should be able to get his deer licence now, don't think that the hunter's ed course goes to the CFO. At least he'll have his own tag, and won't have to use yours, even if the PAL is not issued by the time deer season rolls around.
 
I was going to add something similar to tjsudbury's point, but he beat me to it...he is old enough to have his own licence and tag, and that can be obtained the day after successful completion of the Hunter Ed course. But without his PAL in hand, he must be under your direct supervision at all times whenever he has the firearm, and again, just one between the two of you.
 
TJ is correct... Your son can obtain his hunting licence and tag... But without the PAL he can not possess his own firearm... One gun for you both, arms length apart... Irronically... If your son was UNDER 18, he could have his OWN firearm... The loop hole that everyone skirts around is that it is LEGAL to be licenced for solo hunting (in Ontario) at 15 years of age, but technically a PAL can not be obtained until 18 years of age... Conservation Officers don't pursue action against an under 18 licence hunter. There still has not been a clear answer to this situation.
 
We thought that submitting all the PAL stuff 5 months in advance was a wise move.

It looks like 12 months would have been a smarter move.

Looks like 1 gun it is, at least we'll be out together
 
Another option is that I belive you can still hunt with a bow by yourself without a PAL. I may be wrong but I know you don't need a PAL to buy one so you shouldn't need one to hunt with it. I also just went through the PAL prosses and after 59 days I sent in a friendly e-mail asking what the wait time was and it was mailed the next day.

and to hoytcanon I belive that you have to have a minors firearms licence which allows you to buy ammo and hunt alone but not buy firearms between the ages of 15-18(I'm 18 just finished that prosses)

That won't work for him he did the restricted and non restricted so the phone interviews have to be done still

Yes, you can solo hunt at 15 years of age in Ontario. And, you do need the Minor's Permit if you wish to do so with a firearm. If you are under 18, or are still waiting for a PAL, you can solo hunt with a bow. You just need to be aware that for hunting purposes, a bow is considered a firearm in Ontario and so, there are specific cautions and rules that must be adhered to, such as distances away from roads, encased after dark, etc.
 
Once completing the Hunters ed course, he is able to use firearms hunting. So legally for hunting purposes, he is within the law. Unfortunately federally, he is not, as he is not allowed to possess a gun unless under direct supervision (you) and you can not have one either. To me the fact that someone over 15, yet under 18 can have a permit and use a gun hunting and be legal, and suddenly upon becoming 18, is now not legal is stupid.

The option would be to use a bow or crossbow, and you use the rifle like a previous poster had mentioned.

A correction to my previous post...since posting that, I have discovered that the CFO has placed restrictions and conditions over and above the Firearms Act on young hunters. While the FA holds that a young hunter with a Minors Permit can be in unsupervised legal possession of a firearm, the CFO has placed supervisory conditions upon this. The young hunter must be supervised for some time (from what I was shown, I think it is a minimum of 1 year) before the CFO will allow him/her to solo hunt with a firearm...in other words, the CFO is not recognizing the legitimacy of the Minors Permit until such time as his conditions are met.

It's stated in the hunter apprentice program section of the OHEP page of the regs. I don't have a copy of this year's regs handy, but I do have a 2010 copy that I retrieved from the bottom of a pack. From that copy of the regs: "...The apprentice must share a single firearm with the mentor."
