With the bear mauling in Ontario recently, do you Ontarians think that they will bring back your spring bear hunt? I've seen a few interviews on the news with some people calling for it to be re-instated. Is there the political will to bring it back?

Hunters and Northerners have been calling for its return since it was cancelled to no avail.

The MNR has issued extra bear tags in the south to clean up the bear problem close to the city where important people live.

I dont ever seeing it comming back. That would require the government admitting they have no ####ing clue what they are doing when it comes to managing our Natural Resources.

if hunter were smart they wouldnt buy the second tag and just let the bear problem get biger till theses F^%$# tree hugger get smart

Their is Toronto and then their is the rest of Ontario.Toronto has the votes and is composed of Liberals. We haven't a snowballs chance in hell of seeing the spring hunt returned.I laugh every time a bear wanders into a southern Ontario town and the panic sets in.Get used to it folks because the bears are expanding south Ha Ha.They will be in Toronto by next summer.

hey i resemble that remark :p as far as i care.....we should all ban togeather and not buy a tag.......lets let the bastards start paying us to clean up the bull #### they caused us  why should i or you have to pay 35.00$??? for a bear tag?

Toronto has the votes and that is where this young lady comes from(Kitchener/Waterloo)
Maybe with one of there own getting it, bears won't be so cute and cuddly. I understand she was a doctor as well, we do have a shortage of those.

Well as far as i am concerned it will never be back.Let the bears move south and take back some of there natural habitat. Instead of fighting for it to come back more people should of put up a fight to not lose it.All trappers know the mnr has no clue what is going on and they will be the first to admit it right to your face if no one else is around.

Not yet...........

You really cant get much closer to the GTA without being in it.

You have a point gth

However we here just think North Bay is just a suburb of Ottawa anyway

Fog, I don't think boycotting the fall bear hunt is an effective way to pressure the politicians. Knowing their logic they will simply cancel it as well due to "lack of interest by the hunting population".

Also I would guess there are more bears shot and buried by locals than the hunters take in any given area.

I may be late to this post but I agree with gth. What I read is residents in northern communities are adopting the shoot, shovel, shut up approach to the Bear problem.

I think if it the problems continue to get worse for another year or two, the gov't may be pressured enough to reinstate it.

Likely with another death or a couple of good maulings unfortuntately, it might be back.

It wouldn't take much to justify killing a bear, especially in your backyard. Maybe the more bears killed "in self defence" that are reported, the better chance of getting the hunt back???

Any bear in my backyard will be dealt accordingly. And I would have no problem reporting it.

Yeah......... well not being a cop complicates reporting the bear you dusted in the back yard....

Its not worth the hassle or the one sided investigation into the matter, hence the SSS mentality of the problem areas.

Some are lucky, one of the guys I help out with his trapping duties is allowed one "unused" bear on his licence. You just report it as an 'unfit hide' and bury it.

Nothing to do with being a cop. If it's you and the bear, and the bear is dead, there is only one story. With a death in Ontario now, and a bear in the immediate area, it's not hard to justify.

Maybe you end up getting charged, maybe not. It's not criminal code, so it is easy enough to defend yourself.

And I guess I should clarify, I don't live in town and don't really have any neighbours to be concerned about.
