HI Guys spring black bear season is almost upon us. im pulling out all my barrels and getting the grease and bait ready. the wife and i bought a hunt camp just north of northbay last last year so this will be my first spring there. i usually use 2 barrels at each stand i plan on putting 2 sites up. i am not new to bear hunting ive had some very good luck in the past in my previous spots. just looking to see how other people set there baits up and what they plan on using. I'm between sudbury and north bay. I've kept all my bacon fat, and leftovers from rendering lard. Sardines usually get staked up in trees. No idea what I'll be using for bait this year, whatever is cheapest. I usually have a contact of some sorts. Some years it's been waste donut and tidbits, other years expired dog food. This year I'm on my own. I'll call local co op and see if they have anything I guess..
Any updates on the snow in the bush in the sudbury area? I'm looking to make a quick baiting run.
I've had good luck with spraying vanilla around the area, spreading fryer grease/bacon grease that I've saved all year. Sardines always get hit quickly.

My main bait is popcorn as its light and easy and takes them a while to eat. I use a shaker barrel to make them work for it. Cheapest syrup I can find is lightly spread on the popcorn. Don't go too heavy or it sticks and won't come out of the holes in the barrel.

How do you make the popcorn in bulk? I've never used that i have access to expired dog food so i use it and have had great luck also where do you buy vanilla that you can spray? . i live in south river went to the camp 2 days ago witch is by martin river theres less then a foot of snow in the bush and all the lakes are still ice covered i would assume sudbury is close to the same

I pop it in a large pot on my propane stove at the cottage. I only use 5 gal pails so not too hard to fill. I sometimes make a few garbage bags full at home before I head up if I have room. Air popper works great and is less work than the stove.
I just buy bulk liquid vanilla and put it in an old spray bottle. Spray it around the entire area, up high so it spreads and carries in the wind..
Checked a private gated road behind markstay today. Still 6" of snow in spots.

Spot and stalk is a great way to hunt spring Blackies for the first couple of weeks until the trees and plants start to get foliage. Several years ago,in their infinite wisdom,OMNRF re-wrote the baiting regulations vastly restricting where bait stations could be set up making 90% of the traditional locations in southern Ontario illegal due to the proximity of roads,trails,paths where the "non-hunting" public regularly used them (not within 200M). Also greatly restricted was the proximity stations could be placed to residences (no closer than 500M unless written permission was obtained from the owner). Since this past year,the restrictions have been relaxed considerably from being too stringent,but,they're still tight enough to make baiting difficult,but,not impossible. That made "spot and stalk" a very viable alternative with reasonable success rates. Personally,not being a dedicated Bear hunter by any stretch, I find it very relaxing when I go with friends.
You would be further ahead, setting up one barrel at four spots, two for a generally Northern wind and two for a generally Southern wind, otherwise you may be pooched on the actual hunting days. Try to put a couple kilometers between each spot or at least get them in different drainages. If you have areas with cuts or open beaver valleys, it would be worth getting set up early with a pair of binos and watch for feeding bruins... generally on green slopes with a Southern exposure or along streams and ponds.

Both my spots are on one side of a body of water. Bears gotta swim 200 yards if they want to come from that way.
Find a nuisance trapper (one that traps for towns and cities) I used to get 5-10 beavers a week from my hook up (he works for a pest control company as a trapper)
Beavers for stink bait, cattle rations for real bait (80lb bags for 13.99. Oats, corn and add my own Mollasses.

I've thrown out a barrel in the past, chained to a tree, with a couple different vantage points 50-75m away to sit at depending on the wind. Barrel is full of a 100lbs of the cheapest dog chow I can find, with some sausages and molasses stirred in for good measure. Small holes on the barrel so the bear has to work it for awhile. Gets enough to keep coming back but doesn't empty too quick. Cheers!
