Ontario spring turkey 2016

I took a friend out last year when he expressed interest in turkey hunting. I then coached him through getting his pal and Rpal, ohep, and turkey course, gear, gun, etc. He went out Monday on his own and didn't see anything but deer. I went out with him today and helped him bag this beautiful bird. 22.5 lbs and a 10.5" beard....not bad for his first bird and his second time hunting ever! The bird put on a 2 hour strut and gobbling bonanza! Awesome mating display, I just love these birds.

Here is my buddy with his bird taken at about 9:15am today

Nice bird, congrats... I saw a few flakes Tuesday morning but no accumulation like that... what general area were you in that got all that snow?

I think a calibrated scale would let some air out, though...

Does Ontario no longer require all birds to be taken to an approved check station? When I lived there they always weighed every bird (on a $10 fishing scale, of course...).

No, not anymore. Now there is just a mandatory harvest report by noon the next day.

well, I'm tagged out....... had a dozen or so gobblers answering me this morning before they all came off the roost, some were right on top of me some were farther away. 4 jakes about 20 yards right behind me, this one and another about the same size in my decoys and two bigger toms about a hundred yards across the field following a couple of hens. there were birds everywhere this morning and I can't for the life of me use a mouthcall so when I raised my hand from using my slate call to my gun the fun started. the two in the decoys didn't know if they should run or not so they would run a few feet then strut so I would raise my hand some more and they would run a few feet and I would stop and so would they......... well I finally had my hand on my 935 and had the red dot on him and forgot the safety........ damn, now I have to move again...... took the safety off and the click is what did it, they started running and I had to wait until they were about 30 yards away before they separated and was able to take the shot.
he was down at 5:50 am, not my biggest bird but for the short hunt this morning one of my more memorable gobblers.
3/4" spurs, 8 1/2" beard.
good luck everyone

So that would be a Wild Turkey on the Rocks? Laugh2 Sorry, I couldn't help it. (Nice bird!!)

Well done....lol

I took a jake this morning...... Was stuck on a call for work and didn't hit the woods until 8:15..... Managed to do some run and gun and called him in to about 15 yards..... Hopefully I get another chance to get out... But in the meantime the boys wil be happy that we will get our annual turkey strip feast ..... To be honest, it was just nice to get out in the woods.....

I managed to slip out yesterday and had two lone hens come in and of course the big guys were in the other field and for some apparently unknown reason wanted nothing to do with the lone hens that came in separately. Out tomorrow and I will try the other field, wanna guess where the toms will be?
