I wanted to do the Turkey hunting course in Ontario, but working every weekend of the year makes it difficult...Im trying to time my midnight shifts with the day course. Can someone tell me how many hours about does the seminar and the test take?? Thanks!

LOL, pretty much. We signed up, went to class to save a seat. Then went out for breakfast, then lunch. Came back and wrote the test, passed it without listening to 1 sec of the crap.

... some continue to say "nothing but a money grab". :(

Thats pretty much the way I see it.

Do I have to take a course to shoot a partridge? NO! So why the hell do I have to pay for a course to shoot a turkey.

So they show you what turkey crap looks like, big deal, I ain't hunting turkey crap and I'm almost sure I knew what a turkey looked like before I went in to the course to get my license. I could rant all day on this.

I know some are really ticked with this course thing but I have to say there is a certain ammount of safety that goes along with turkey hunting. I would not say there is enough to put a whole day in at all and I'm glad that they have shortened it as to what it used to be.

The thing is that most don't think of is that now for a hunter to take it, they have already heard from others or read about some of the safety practices that go along with the sport. Back in 1987 when they started this safety course there was No one to talk about these things we all know. Not very many people knew what a wild turkey looked like, let alone what they sounded like in the woods. I will say that I took the long version of the course and did learn a little about it and now everyone that enters the woods is all on the same level and they know whats right and what wrong.

I remember leaving that course and going to look for some more info like Magazines, VHS tapes and there was almost None at all in Ontario. I found a turkey hunting VHS tape at Ellwood Epps Sports when he owned it and I paid $79.00 for it, yes and I still have it to this day.

So what I see is that the info is far advanced now then what it was back then, so they should slack off so on the courses, but I see know reason that they can not setup a internet -online thing now...

OFAH and another cash grab as far as im concerned.. Just like a few years ago when they tryed to push for a mandatory safety training course for bowhunters.. I wonder where all the cash goes for these courses,, you always hear from people that attend them that there were several hundred people at the course now..

Glad I got out of that province and moved to where people come look and see what you have hanging in your garage,, where people walk to their trucks with uncased guns,, and no one bats an eye!! God I love Alberta!

With a proposed limited Elk hunt in Ontario, wonder if there will be a special Elk Seminar/ Licensing required too ?

Count on it. I feel the time has come long ago that there are enough turkey hunters to be able to pass the knowledge on to the new hunters. It makes no sence that I can just buy a tag to do the Southern Ontario deer shotgun hunt, or buy a tag to try and shoot a bear with a bow no problem, but need to take a special course to shoot a bird with a shotgun. For the OFAH it has just bacome a prized revinew streem.

It is a cash grab, plain and simple.

Dont wear blue white or red...thats the only thing that is different from the hunters ed course....

Its a waste of time, and a waste of money

When was the last time you put on an american flag to go hunting anyways?

Probably he hasn't.......

BUT

when this turkey hunting thing started up again, there was a hunter lying in wait, his back towards a tree, and as he sat down his pant leg rose up on him exposing his sock, a white one at that, and as he had his one leg crossed over the other, and shaking in time with his thoughts of his favorite song......

Another hunter approaching saw this white patch, bobbing up and down, and as the pants were dark, the boots were ever so slightly turned, this appeared to be neck on a Turkey, unfortunately this hunter raised his shotgun and fired, and left the other hunter with a number of pellets in his now very sore foot..........

Yes we should all know out target, and what is beyond, and all those rules we have ingrained in our heads, but $hit happens......

Unfortunately the hunter with the sore foot, never knew not to wear white while Turkey hunting......

Lets not even talk about the hunter who shot....

This was a story told when I went for my Turkey Seminar

I now make sure all my socks are dark in color.......

But the guy that shoot at socks will probably be the guy that arrow you ass in the fall. I don't see how a course will prevent idiots from shooting at other people.

I would've heard the same story if I listened, but I didn't, and got like 98 on the course. Do dress in the same color as your prey seems pretty self explanatory, just like don't go stalking deer with antlers on your head.
