The remlins are in fact getting quite ridiculous price wise.
When I was cutting my teeth on hunting and looking for my first deer rifle, Canadian tire had marlin 30-30 rifles complete with "decent" scopes for around the $300 mark...... they were easily $300 cheaper than the next step up...... somehow these guns are now among the more expensive options.....
Of course, there were no synthetic stocks etc back then......

Yes I do agree. I have a nib 30-06 carbine on its way to my mail box right now. It will be my back-up gun to the same in 308
Those simmons scopes were nothing to write home about.

I am die hard lever guy! Id go with the 308..
I alternate between my blr 30-06 and my m94 32 special..
this year I'll add my m94s in .375 and 307 but the 32 still comes out when I'm in the swamps.. I'm on the ground still hunting 80% of the Time and most of the 13 deer if killed in 13 year of hunting have been sneaking into their bedrooms..

^^^ not much more enjoyable way to hunt deer than sneaking the big timber, specially when carrying a light easy carrying open sighted lever gun.

If you are hunting the Bancroft area and doing any walking take the one that weighs to least.
If you are only at a stand then take the one that you can shoot the fastest.
Most of the time you have about as much time as there it is, gone.

They were the economy class 336s with plain jane uncheckered hardwood stocks similar to the marlins 'glenfield' cheap line of leverguns.
They looked decent and most shot good.
I find the 336 and its variants to be quite accurate.

If we consider the amount of machining, fitting, and workmanship required to build even the cheapest version of the 336, it is still quite a bargain compared to an Axis or Ruger American type rifle.
