Ooogling the H&K MR22/HK416 at Epps

I couldn't help but ask to see the HK MR22 at Epps, yesterday and rushed home today to try and figure out what extra's one would get for $4,000 on an AR. It appears to be a pretty cool setup, piston driven, free float forend; the finish was kind of weird, more like baked on leather rather than parkerizing, but theirs didnt have the sights on so I left thinking it was just another $4G flat top.:eek: However after reviewing HK's webpage I think they must have left off the removable rear drum sight for fear that someone may steal it. Anyone know where these sights can be obtained from? Other than HK directly?

I'd imagine that they come with the gun. I bet their floating around the box somewhere.

I really don't see the appeal to them. Maybe as a collector piece if you collect Hk's. Or if your swimming in cash and already have all the cool black rifles in Canada.
 
I'm a huge H&K sackrider... but 4000$? Hell no. Roughly half the price, I'd definitely consider it... but the big problem is, the political climate is such that I'd probably cry myself to sleep for years to come if I bought one of these and had it confiscated months later by a system that threw us overboard years ago.
 
I dunno...personally if They came to my door, Id offer it as a donation to the local LE in exchange for a Tax credit...there's no way they'd turn down a piston driven A/R; maybe they'd let me visit her on weekends?
 
Didn't they stop production on the HK 416 due to problems with the piston system. IIRC the Norwegians have had problems with them. So for $4000 I'd like it to be totally problem free.

I think the cost will go down as US production of the MR223 ramps up. AFAIK these are not on the US market yet due to import restrictions but H&K is planning to produce domestically to circumvent that. I would consider one of these at $2500 but $4000 is a little too steep for me.

I've never had a problem with the piston system. Care to elaborate? It's very similar to the G36. More reliable then anything else on the market.

They will get the MR556. The 223 is European. The down side to all these MR rifles is they will not mate to other AR lowers. Only the actual 416 upper is compatible with the AR. To conform to German law, the placement of the rear take down pin was moved forward.

I thought the only differences between the 223 and 556 was nomenclature? With .223 being viewed as a hunting cartridge vs. 5.56x45 being military. Both models should be capable of firing either cartridge anyway, it just makes the antis feel better.

Yes the rounds are the same. I was merely stating that the US version is called the MR556 not MR223 like the Euro one.

Internet BS...Statement realesed by HK regarding your info....

Contrary to anonymous source reports on the Internet, the U.S. military HAS
NOT encountered significant problems with HK Model 416s in combat
conditions. HK416s are currently being used in combat operations by U.S.
and NATO special operations forces.

Furthermore, Heckler & Koch HAS NOT suspended production of the HK416. The
HK416 continues to be one of Heckler & Koch's most successful and sought
after products.

From what I read, wasn't it due to piston freezing and the inability to use the charging handle as a forward assist to free it? Sounds like a design issue to me.

Well that and it was some European country that was having the probem, not the US Military. I'm sure there would be no problems with the Mr.223 in desert conditions.
 
Anyway you slice it its overpriced, get a Sig Carbine (which is completely proven) and you`ll have $1000 left over for ammo......

The main problem I read was that the Norweigens climate couldnt fire their gun in suppressor mode (A switch to leak more gas out of the piston)
 
Norwegians had Hk bastardize their Hk416's

The Hk417's just dont work and are still an R&D idea (anyone buying one now is a fool IMHO)

The Hk416 is still being made and used in Combat.
yes high round count guns have some issues -- but at 20k from a DI gun your into 4 bolts and at least the 2nd barrel...

The MR 223 does not come with iron sights. You have to purchase these after sale. If you can find OEM HK sights they will run you about $350 CDN if you can find them. Try hkparts.com out of the US. I was contemplating buying the MR instead of the SIG CQB but did not like the HK configured with the 16" barrel. I would have bought it with the 14.5" or 10" with the A2 style flash hider if they came this way........but they don`t. Didn`t want to have the barrel chopped either. I bought the SIG and am very happy with it! The HK MR is very nice and may reconsider in the future but have decided to wait and see what transpires with configurtations that may come later for civi release.
