Went to the range today, had the .416Rem, the .338WM and my 2 8x57's... M-700 Remmy and M-98 Mauser.

I fired off 5 handloads in each (with so-so results) and then was just shooting some 200gr Speers, with the M-98, that I had loaded about a year ago. I'd fired about a dozen and was on the third cartridge in the magazine. I fired it and something felt wrong but I didn't clue in. Tried to load the next bullet and it wouldn't load. Wtf? Tried the next and no go with it... what the hell?
ROA was there with me and he realized I had a dud that had put a bullet in the barrel, blocking the others from loading. Pulled the bolt and sure enough, there was the brass ass-end of a bullet looking at me from the chamber... So the problem was that I failed to put a powder charge in that cartridge. I don't know how many thousands of rounds I have loaded over the years but this is the first time I ever did that.

Good thing I wasn't able to chamber another round!! :runaway:

Oooops...

Then I got to go to the local Home Hardware and ask if I could bring the M-98 into the store to get the appropriate sized dowel to knock the bullet out. That was interesting...

when I load ammo for my buddy I usually leave one without powder for each 50 rounds with powder. Keeps him on his toes. I keep trying to blow him up but no luck yet

Here's pics of the cartridge case and bullet.

I just dumped the dud in with about 25 other 8x57 brass but it was easy to find cuz there is no powder residue around the neck of the cartridge... shiny new.

The bullet tip ended up flattened out from being knocked out of the barrel with a dowel. I'm gonna reload it... not often you get to fire the same bullet twice...

Primer ended up with an odd indent. I don't know if I fired twice on that primer or if lack of powder failed to form the primer more around the firing pin.

Funky little powder ring left on the bullet by the primer.

I just loaded another 10 and I assure you there was powder in each... ;)

Pretty ####ty pics, sorry cameras aren't my bag baby...

And you dont notice like a real big difference between a primer fire and a powder fire? Do you only use one grain of powder?
