:) Ooops to many Silent Sam's posted in wrong forum...

Oh come on now, how can it possibly be thicker than the bush in Ontario ;)

Not just do to the thickness of the bush has to do with blacktail being more reclusive than any other known deer species.

In his book "Deer of the World", world-renowned nature photographer Erwin Bauer describes the coastal blacktail as the hardest deer to find and photograph. "On average, blacktails tend to live in cover that is denser then that preferred by whitetail and mule deer,... any creatures dwelling in dense dark places are more difficult to observe than those spending their lives in the open," writes Bauer.

The 3X3 (first pic) weighed 112lbs the 2X2 (second pic) weighed 124lbs weighted @ the butcher shop we didn't weigh the last one but it was a lot smaller and easier to drag out of the bush than the other two.

The bodies of the first two are excellent examples of mature blacktail deer in the area I hunt yes they get bigger but not by much.

I will agree with Camp Cook about the difficulty of hunting Coastal/Island Blacktails.
The coastal brush is so think and lush, that it is practically impenetrable by a person walking.
The Blacktails just "melt" into it and disappear.
They are a bit elusive to start with, and the terrain they inhabit is well nigh impossible to hunt easily.[Clearcuts excepted]
Does are a bit easier, but nice bucks like the ones pictured can be difficult to come by.
I spent 3 years on Vancouver Island, and hunted Blacktails in the Tahsis/Gold River area.
Managed to take several very nice bucks, but it was hard hunting compared to the interior Muley hunting I was accustomed to.
My tastebuds tell me that the Blacktail is the best table fare of the three species of deer we can hunt in BC.You sometimes hear that these deer tend to be on the "small" size, but there are some decent bodied bucks that will dress in the 140+ lb area. Many of the does are just medium dog sized, particularly on Haida Gwai'i.
Nice work CC!!! Eagleye

I will agree but I will add that Sitka Blacktail from the Queen Charlotte Islands are an even better tasting deer meat than coastal blacktail.

The photo site Hunt 101 I use is down for some reason the pics will pop back up when they get their issues dealt with...

Hopefully they will get them dealt with soon.

I've been using Hunt101 for years and this is the first time there has ever been a problem with it.

Ardent these are not big trophy bucks they are good examples of mature local pure bred coastal blacktail that come from the small area that I hunt.
