not a competitor right now, but thinking of getting an open type pistol in the next while,

maybe xmas specials,

looking at a STI trubor, matchmaster, steelmaster, and I love the look of the DVC open in gold.

or perhaps a Tanfoglio custom eric 2007

it will be in 9mm and there is one in the EE nice, and a dealer has sold some of my pistols so I have a large credit there,

so I have small hands and am thinking the single stack 1911 may work best, not really any gun shop nearby where I can hold a open pistol let alone try it,

was thinking of attending a IPSC practice at an indoor range but that is not until almost mid-January and want to make my mind up by then to take advantage of the December specials in pricing and perhaps before the price increase at the end of January 2017 just thinking ahead,

so I a 9mm which of the guns will fit a very small hand, I would like to shoot the 9mm cheaper in cost, and have 2k in starline 9mm+p brass, so I am almost set, and want to get one of those fancy race type holsters as well,

was thinking of getting a used gun but do not want anybody else well used stuff, as I do not know how to fix an open gun and do not want to ship the purchase to a plumber six times to get it fixed,

do not know anybody well enough to ask a favour to try one out and it is a lot of money to get a gun that does not fit,

thanks the big question is can I reach the trigger somewhat comfortably

I would recommend going to a local club on IPSC night and just hold a few of the guns to see what style you would like before investing thousands of $. Having small hands can be challenging, but but there are enough accessories to accommodate most hand shapes. I have medium to small hands and I prefer the CZ/Tanfoglio style of guns, but you would really have to try to see what fits you. Any of the choices above are good, and will suit your needs.
 
I have STI 40cal open guns. I feel there is no disadvantage here in Canada as were limited to 10rd mags. With the right load you have zero issue making the comp work, brass is cheap and plentiful and i don't have to change my press.
 
1911 and 2011 have the same grip dimensions as i understood?

Triggers are all replaceable with short/med/long as well.

Should be no difference in sizing at all between the two. Just the overall feel.

This not true. A double stack gun has a larger grip then a single stack gun. If you have small try the CZ or Tangfoglios. You can play around with grips on a sti to make it fit you hand. But if you ever have case head separation in a plastic grip , the grip is most likely scraped. With a steel griped you will not have this problem. And if you are shooting major loads with a 9 mm case this will qeventually will happen. The

Can't say as we've ever had anyone call us looking for a new 2011 grip after a case head separation, Joe...at least not recently.

Maybe they don't tell us, but based on all the stuff they do tell us - I'd assume they would...
 
Where are you located? I'm up in Sundre and wouldn't have any problem letting you try out my Akai 2011 open gun in 9mm major.

west of Edmonton but can travel to red Deere or Edmonton or even Calgary if nobody north of red Deere can be convinced to let a newbie try out a real pistol

Hi Sean. It's been a long time. Had one a couple years ago. Split the grip where the mainspring housing goes in to it. 100% my fault. Did not do my do diligence's with my brass. They might not tell you knowing it is their fault.
 
If you have a small hand, the Tanfoglio, CZ or Single Stack 1911 will fit your hand better. However, no open guns have problem more durable or have more plentiful parts than the 2011 design. You can get the grip reduced a little and get an extended mag release and it may work for you. The single stack 1911 will be more difficult to reload than the double stack guns. Also, if you plan to go to the U.S to shoot, you may wish to keep the potential for using high capacity magazines you can borrow down there.

A single stack 1911 open gun will also not be very desirable for resale value.

As people said, go to a club and handle a few different guns before making a purchase. Buy once, cry once and get the gun that you want.
 
I have small(ish) hands, the point that I can't reach the magazine release without an extended mag button, and then, just barely. That being said, I have no problems with the STI wide body grip. I do use a short trigger, but could probably handle a medium with no problem. I really believe that it's all just a matter of training and getting used to what you have, but I've been shooting for a long time.
