Open sight adjustment?

my only centerfire with iron sights is my BLR 308. I could no longer see the rear sight so I put on a set of skinner peeps. Zeroed at 200 I have no problem hitting my coyote gong at 300.

You can see a moose around here at 25 yards just as easily as at 1000 yards.

I’d like to be set up with iron sights from about 25 yards to 250 yards.
That’s about where all my previous shots have

I think that’s about my comfort zone

So sighting in at 25 yards has about 8 inch drop at 300 yards, compared to 7 inch drop if sighting in at 200 yards.
Makes more sense to sight in at 25 yards and then test at 300 ?

Thanks, I think I could figure it out that way and I have the tools.
Seems a bit complicated though 😁

So basically I can put a target at 100 yards and use my chrony and Hornady app?
Everyone tries to over-complicate simple stuff to the point of confusion.

Check on line for a couple of balistic charts; someone has likely already done the math. I would sight it in 2 or 3" high. Here is one:

It's a 500 yard rifle that will likely only be used within 100 yards. Sight it in 1 1/2" hig at 100 yards, you are good out to about 250 yards. With iron sights you should not be shooting out past 150 or 200.

Using 100 gr or 158 gr? At those ranges, it won't make any difference.

Save the fancy math for the next time you are shooting out past 300 yards.

The issue is - at what sight in distance can you shoot a meaningful group? A 1/4 inch sighting error at 25 yards has a tremendous effect. Less so at 50 yards, less so at 100 yards, assuming you can shoot a reasonably tight group at longer distance. Whatever sight-in distance you choose, you would be obliged to confirm at 300 y. And if that moose is actually at 350 y, what then?

I have a range finder as well, I would use that

Factory irons and a big game rifle is a pretty nuance based sight in.
The ability to keep shots into the front half of a deer sized critter much beyond 200 yards/meters ain’t for the faint of heart.

Therefore sight in at 100 y/m a few inches high………

For yucks and giggles I think I’ll take my 336 Marlin 30/30 out tomorrow and see what my 62 year old eyes can muster at 200 with a Williams peep and a fibre front bead……..
Took the 1952 vintage 336 Marlin 30/30 out today, fired off 10 vintage 170 grain SilverTip’s which cronies out at 2060 fps avg.

100 yards with a 6 o’clock hold…. I laid in a windage tweak after this group.(5 inch square)

200 yards looked like this, I’m not fiddling with elevation since for slightly more serious work I run hand loaded 170gr Speer’s, damn near 100 fps faster than the factory fodder.

Dang things were fuzzy at 200 trying to maintain a good 6 o’clock hold…….

What do you mean? If it’s further than 300 ?
I don’t know if I would take a shot at 4 or 5 hundred yards as I’d have to do a hold over and I’m not that comfortable with open sites.
