Open sight at 200M with SKS

Fact is: they were shot mostly with SKSes... but the engagement distances tended to favor close combat and the SKS is good at this. The AK-47 is, too.

No stress, but then you'd know that if you knew me, read my posts and had a few more posts under your belt , I just keep hearing of these fabled SKS groups and would actually like to see some in person.That's all. Now where's my Extra Large Double Double.

Come down to the next CGN shoot in Squamish and you can try my sks. I bet you could put in 2" groups, at 100yds. It's like the fabled AR groups of 10" bbl'd AR's shooting 1.5" or better groups at 100yds.

I haven't fired any 10" or 11.5" AR's for accuracy but I put 3 rounds into an inch and a half at 100m with a SIG shorty (9" barrel)......first 3 rounds I shot too. Barrel lenght has nothing to do with accuracy, and I'm sure a 10"-11.5" AR could do the same.

Barrel length just might have something to do with accuracy...Shorter barrels are often more accurate than longer barrels, to a point. More rigid and less whippy. And less chance of the bullet encountering bad rifling on the way down the pipe.

Not saying a 2 inch barrel makes the ultimate sniper weapon, but 18-20 inch barrels tend to outshoot 26 inch and similar barrels.

What makes the SKS not soo accurate is the short sight ratius.
If the rear sight was back on the reciever would make it more accurate.

I shot a three round 1" group with my Russian SKS at 100 yards once! I jumped up and down and did a little dance after seeing that. Of course any rifle in the world can do that if you're really lucky that day

After doing an acid test and shooting ten - 10 round targets (total of 100 rounds) did I find that it actually shot consistent 4" groups at 100 yards.

I figure going ou to the range, shooting 5 rounds then pronouncing the group size isn't good enough. You have to consistently shoot that over a number of rounds to confirm it.

BTW - that's a pretty decent target for an SKS at 200 yards with open sights, good on you RobertMcC !

I shot 20 rounds at a target at 100yards and found 5 hits within 2.5 inches. Shot some awesome .312 min. one shot groups.

A couple of years ago, I shot a 3 Gun match in Lethbridge and that target looks like the one from one of the competitors who shot an SKS ar 25 yards!!

I wish I could see the dang target at 200m with open sights...I've been trying to see how my Nagant shoots but my eyes suck.

that looks like my target shot with sks-d at 50 yards, great rifle to shoot, lots of fun, not very accurate.

I could not do that with my sks at 200 yards, not if my life depended on it.

I was pretty dissapointed with how my Nagant was shooting, but then I realized:
1. I have bad eyesite and I couldn't really see the ring on the paper
2. I was shooting "free hand" off the bench (no sandbag or rests)
3. I was using Hungarian surplus ammo
So there is still hope!

Rohann, can you post the picture of your Nagant's target @ 200m? Let's all take a look and find solutions for you. Nagant is a good rifle, it should do better.

But generally speaking, yes. Solid mounts for SKS are few and far between. Anything that mounts on the front gas-tube, rear site mount or rear dust cover hardly qualifies as "solid."

A good optic, solidly mounted to the receiver (drilled, tapped etc), fed with quality ammo is going to make an SKS more accurate.
