Open sights, my eyes aren't working

My eyes are starting to give a bit and I am having a heck of a time using iron sighted rifles (Swede and Swiss)

I'm looking a options for adding a diopter to my shooting glasses. Merit seems to have the best but is a bit $$$$. Another company has one that is basically a plastic dot with a hole that sticks to glasses via static electricity.

Any experience from CGNers with anything similar?

Any idea where a cheap bugger like me can get some of the static clingy plastic in sort of bulk to make my own?

A lot of people benefit from a diet that is high in blueberries and carrots. Yes, carrots..just like your mother told you many years ago. My eyes are better now than 3 or 4 years ago and I attribute a lot of that improvement to blueberries. Fresh blueberries, blueberry yogurt, jam and especially the night before you plan to shoot. Its worth the time and effort to experiment and there are many benefits other that a clearer sight picture when shooting. You can also buy little tablets at the health food store that contain the same chemicals and are designed for improved eye health. Worth a try IMHO. Best wishes........wTc

"...yogurt..." Pre-digested cheese.
"...the same chemicals and are designed for improved eye health..." Called vitamin 'A'.
"...my shooting glasses..." Prescription? May be time to have your eyes checked.

Guys

Thanks for the helpful advice but.....I did just get my eyes checked. My prescription did not change. In fact the doc said my eyesight had improved (I assume more cafine in my system this time had a positive effect).

It seems to be more a problem of fatigue than anything. Early on in a match or shooting session I am okay but I have to work at keeping a few of the front sight in the rear notch. After a while it just ain't there for me.

I have no problem with peep sights (of course, they are better) so I was looking for a way to help myself out.

Assuming I eat blueberry yogurt with a carrot stick for a spoon and I still have the same problem, are there other options.

Has anybody got any experience with diopters mounted on their glasses?

Can you buy static clingy plastic somewhere?

It is a true shame that the art of being a creative cheap bastard is dying out and everyone thinks they have to buy everything they need.

I'm so cheap that when I break wind it sounds like a silent dog whistle.

Clip on sunglasses with small pin hole drilled in lens.

The suction cup aperture (I have one and don't like it, flip up sunglasses are better)

Below, would like to have one (BUT I'm a cheap bastard)
(NOTE: Aperture hole size depends on ambient lighting conditions)

Must be on the Olympic shooting team to get one of these for free. :(

How much does a cheap pair of flip up sunglasses cost.

That one had me breaking wind laughing :D
Love the idea of the cheap sunglass lens! Hey presto...instant peep sight!

Okay, cheap flip up sunglasses......hmmmm. So how did you go about getting the pin hole in the right place. Just mess around with a hole in a piece of tape till it worked?

Enough with the carrots already please guys. :)

*Yes to moving the masking tape around with hole in it to find the proper drill location.
(Canadians are allowed to use duct tape) ;)

*Take sunglasses off to drill hole.

I'm with you all the way on this, but there is more. Very important for eye health is lutein. Just google it and see. Even our eye specialist highly recommends it. It is stated that most people do not get enough. It is in egg yolks, but not very much. Some green vegetables, but one green vegitable has outstanding amounts. The leafy kale. Google that, too, for lutein.
Also, I presume the OP is getting proper eye care, but cataracts are very common in older eyes and they can sure sneak up on you. This I know! My shooting eye got so even a scope wasn't clear. It took our eye specialist 15 minutes to replace the clouded up lens and my shooting eye is back to where it was when I was young.
Also, all of those goodies described above, will do absolutely nothing to help cataracts, or help prevent them from progressing. The short, painless operation, while you sit in a chair, does it.

Another option is to add a dab of flourecent paint to the tip of your foresight, something highly visible. Also, try a couple touches on your rear sight V.

try a small hole in a piece of electrical tape and put it on your glasses.
very cheap
I use the lyman sight above as i only use it for bullseye pistol and open sighted rifles and just my plain prescription glasses for other events like shotgunning. The apeture (SP) lets me see my open handgun sights clear for the first time in a few years. well worth the effort and cash

I'm in the same boat-can't use open sights anymore, and had a nice old Savage 219 with a ghost ring peep sight and blade,so I replaced the front sight with a fiber optic sight-and voila'-I can see it.I just got the Williams firesight combination for my SKS,and by taking out the peep sight insert, that works too.I;d like to find a fiberoptic sight for my No 4 mk1 ,but so far no luck-the dovetail is too small,if I want it I'll have to file down an existing base to fit.So before you give up on iron sights-try the fiber optic route

I messed around with tape over an old pair of shooting glasses. Definately helped define the front and rear sight, but things were generally a bit fuzzy. Maybe too small a hole (1/8th inch?)

How big should the hole near your eye be. I know it varies for light conditions but I'd like to hear what others are using.

Basic laws of optics: smaller the aperture, longer the depth of focus. This problem has been plaguing us camera nuts for a century and a half now.

Recent research indicates that a substance called beta-carotene really helps the eyes. You can get it in pills now but the basic source for us cheap Old Farts is still..... you guessed it.... carrots.

Always remember these great words of eternal wisdom from the Ultimate Master:
