I went with Browning X-bolt 22-250, but plan to reload. I dont know much about the .17 hmr. .223 is a common round and easy to get shells for, and if reloading is not your game and 22-250 has no sentimental value .223 is a good choice. I have a bugger of a time getting 22-250 shells (which are worth while).

223 is surely the way to go in my opinion. plenty of stopping power to most "farm distances" (here in Ontario anyways), affordable ammo, good for groundhogs, coons and other pests as well.

Which one depends on budget and personal preference. I love my older bolt action Savage. What you really need to add to your shopping list/budget though if you go with a 223 is a good scope. A quality 3x9x40 is the minimum I think.

I'm looking at ruger mini 14 in .223 as a coyote/just having fun gun and I think cabelas has surplus ammunition 200 rnds for $100
