Just recieved 2 crates of 7.62 from CanadaAmmo, and at first glance I'm not sure how to open it (although I haven't got it home yet to try). No web access at home so I wanted to get a couple hints before the weekend. Any help is much appriciated.

I believe you're supposed to open them like a big can of Klik.

And if you've never opened a can of Klik, this will be your penance!

I had trouble the first time, the second time I had the hang of it.
Oh god I've put 2000 rounds through my SKS......

Anyway, get a prybar. A small crowbar will work.
There's one band with rings that's soldered over top of the flap. You need to rip this one off first. Just pry through the ring against the edge of the box. A few jerks should get it started. Once you've got the first band off, just start at the sides of the other ones. You should be able to get it open with just the prybar in about 6 minutes (I'd love to see some drunken soldiers trying to open one of these under fire)

The lids make great drink carrying trays (yes I'm rural), and if you buy a small folding latch and padlock, the crates make great ammo crates. The steel insert makes them pretty impervious to idiots.

Wearing steel toed boots and doing this outside is a good idea - those boxes are coated in grease.

I've never opened a Czech M43 crate, but I have found a prybar, hammer and a chisel will get into Romanian and Hugarian ammo tins. ;)

The correct answer to how to open any russian ammo can is to drink a litre of vodka and then tear the case open with your bare proletariat hands.

When i got my first crate I pulled it by hand(I figured it would be easy). I grunted, groaned and had some funny marks on my finger for the next couple hours but I got it. I'm sure if i heard hostile gunfire in the distance I'd get into it alot quicker.

I'm sure any large screwdriver/bayonette will assist greatly in mechanical advantage on the ring.

Never heard of Klik? Then you're gonna squeal when u try Kam.:D ..Yes, another relic of meat-like substance from our childhood...
here goes another off topic thread...
Cheers
dB:)

Spam, Kam, Kilk. Canned mystery meat made from kill floor scrappings just like hot dogs.
Opening ammo cans is what bayonets are for.

These are pretty extreme measures, when you consider that if you open it in the proper order, they're really not that bad. Using a propane torch to melt tin welds on a box containing 1120 rounds is insanity to me....:D

Strange day indeed. Do you still have enough fingers to type, or did you use a stick and your teeth to type that?
