After several weeks of hard work getting ready for the hunt it paid off. 20 minutes into legal shooting light this morning one of my hunting partners spotted the 8 point I'd seen while scouting last week. Approximately 75-100 yards out in front of the blind I'd set up for him. You can see the blind in the background of one pic. The buck winded him and tried to duck down and sneak across the cut line but one 180gr 30-06 round dropped him in his tracks. :D Definitely a good load for my old Polaris to carry out. ;)

For those concerned, we were party hunting and took the pics as the guy with the buck tag was on his way over from the other side of the bush to tag it (you can see the buck was tagged as soon as he got there and before gutting).

A very nice second deer for this member of our hunting party.

Very nice bud.... I got a nice 4 pointer this morning myself.... in another thread.... and really nice to see someone else using a .30-06 in 180 grain for deer..... puts 'em down clean....

Congradulations on your opening day buck! Nice to see my favorite cartridge (30-06) perform excellent as usual. A young buck like that will be good eating on the BBQ. Bon appitete!

I have to admit I'm partial to the 270 and might even hunt with a 6mm a bit this season however my friend didn't have a rifle to shoot so I set him up with the Remington 742 30-06 I've got for sale and a leupold 2-7. I told him if he's shot something with it he'll have to buy it... ;)

are you the fat guy? if so how did you get that hottie girlfriend of yours lol. You rich?

Well this morning I took a girl into the bush with us and set her up in one of my better stands. She forgot her tag and outdoors card though so we were a little late as she had to go back home to get it. I got into my stand just after shooting light and managed to jump a deer on the way in. At about 7:30 I saw what looked like a doe heading in to my stand but as it got closer I could see antlers he came in broadside through the brush but but turned and came at me head on. From my treestand on top of the hill I didn't have a lot of choice but to either make a head shot or neck/shoulder shot as all I could see was ass and head as he looked straight up into my stand. I wasn't sure if I'd get a better chance or if he was gonna spook so I took him through the neck with my Browning Medallion A-bolt 270 and dropped him in his tracks. Not a bad little 6 pointer and should be great eating. So far this has been a great week. Had a chat with the MNR (2 CO's) when we were waiting for the other guys to get back to the truck as well.

Good stuff.... I can't wait to get back out in the bush... cutting my first one up tommorow then I am free to head back out to the woods for another week and a half....

Had a doe inside 10 feet tonight for almost 25 minutes in the wmu where I have my doe tag but seeing as it's only day 2 I figured I'd leave that tag in case I see something bigger. After all, who wants to be done hunting on day 2 of a 14 day season?

Day 3. At about 6:55 I pulled the trigger on a coyote. I have a rule to never leave a coyote in the bush if I can help it. I figured that the scent from the yote and the sound of the shot had probably put an end to my hunt for the day but seeing as the other guys were still on watch, I stayed in my stand. As it turns out a 9 pointer passed within 10 yards of where I shot the 6 point yesterday. I took a broadside shot and he bolted about 20 yards and stopped and I put a second round through the back of his head and dropped him in his tracks. 3 days in and we've only got one tag left. This makes 29 deer to my name just a couple days after my 29th birthday. :D Hope the rest of you are having a great hunt as well!
