Opening day grouse...or lack thereof.

Good luck with your moose hunt

Thanks... we are loaded and on the road as I write this... about an hour from the "no cell service" zone... I will post back when we return... but I am looking for a meat bull, not another wall hanger... maybe a 40" two year old... in a perfect world

Let me be the second to wish you luck..... hope you top last year's but that will be tough!

Just a update for all you grouse hunters….it's a banner year up here, North of Thunder Bay. Get my limit of 5 almost every time I go out, and usually see 10 to 20 each outing. Best season in a few years!

I agree !

Nice...and nice smoke pole. I'm only recently coming to appreciate over unders. I have a CZ Mallard that I picked up from a friend this summer, and now, with luck a Bettinsoli Crypto will be here in time for Thanksgiving.

Any chance you want to unload the mallard?.... I call first dibbs......

Good luck this weekend Chuck.... If we get at least one or two frosts this week I will be out for the first time as well....

Ha ha! I'm holding on to the Mallard for now as it's a nice light 20, and doesn't batter my nephew, and hopefully soon my daughter, too much. However, I will keep you in mind should I decide to part with it...deal...?...:)

And, good luck this weekend! We are in for rain the rest of,the week, but hopefully we get a little bit of chill and sun over Thanksgiving.

I wouldn't let it go either.... but was worth a shot..... looks like epps has a few so may pick one up from there......

I went in beghind the house and got my deer feeder going..... put a couple up from under on eof the apple trees.... the weeds are way too thick right now for effective ruffie hunting.....

Also looks like we are in for a tough winter.... the goldenrod is almost as tall as I am (6 foot).....

Walked a whole day and saw exactly one bird. Pretty easy shot, standing on the side of the road and staring at me. I passed as I personally don't see any sporting value in shooting these dumb birds on the ground at 15 feet. I also figured if their numbers are that low I may as well let that one live. The fall colors were breath taking though and made up for no grouse.

So it's a thing that you don't really see many until the leaves drop? I only started last November so that may be why I'm so disappointed so far...

Ruffies are a strange bird. I grew up mostly in Nova Scotia, and the only time we generally got a shot off was when it was flying. They were spooky as hell. Up here in N. Ontario, if you want a wing shot, you're gonna have to walk up it and kick it in the ass. The only wing shooting I do is when there is a flock of four or five in front of me, I shoot one, and the others fly off. That's when the wing shot comes out. I don't differentiate on how they die, cause I hunt primarily to eat the little fellows.

Ruffie numbers are high this year, but Sprucies are through the roof. Not everyone likes the darkies, but I enjoy them. I eat them constantly. I got three with one shot yesterday from my 20 gauge, and about 8 more flew up into the trees. Yes sir, lunch buckets with wings!

Well, things sure sound good around Thunder Bay...around Sudbury they seem to be pretty much extirpated!

^So have the game laws changed in NS? For many decades spruce grouse were illegal to be harvested in that province?? must be different now.......

Still no open season in Nova Scotia, afaik, but he is in northern Ontario.
