Operation Cottage

An Officer from my old Militia Regiment was present and he was wounded during the operation.
 
Blue on blue casualties are an ongoing problem. Joint planning with good intelligence, establishment of boundaries, good comms, co-ordination and exchange of liaison officers helps, but there are no guarantees. Back in 1943 comms were unreliable and there was a big inexperience and fog factor added in.
 
When I was a young man I hunted with an old gentleman who was in 1SSF and was on Kiska. At the time I wasn't smart enough or interested enough to realize what a source of history he was. Regret it now.
 
The Cdn troops who went to Kiska were mostly conscripts who could only be employed on home defence and not sent overseas. This was stretched to include Kiska and the Aleutians.

When I was a kid I know a guy who had been to Kiska and who later volunteered to go active. He then went overseas to join The Lake Superior Regiment in France. I still have one of the Div patches that he gave me.
 
Kiska is closer to Tokyo than to Seattle. Tells you quite a bit. But in any case, places like Wake Island have a better claim to accolades.
 
The Aleutians are a miserable place to live or fight a war. A friend of mine was once stationed on Adak NAS in charge of the Marine Corps security force. I asked him what he'd done to deserve that.;)
