Opinion? Keep the savage or...

So i bought a savage 10 fcp-k in 308 last year. I've had it out a few times and always have 5 shot groups touching at 100m with M80 ball ammo. I really like the rifle, except... It's long and heavy (24" barrel i think)

Would i be disappointed with a shorter 700p?

AFAIK the 700 Police only comes with a 26" pipe. I have had 2 of them and there was no 24" barrel option when I bought them (.308Win. & .300 WinMag).

If you like your Savage, you could always have the barrel cut down to 20" and re-crowned. I did that with a Rem 700 VS. That was my hunting gun.
 
There is a 700P LTR with a 20" barrel. The regular 700 P had a 24" option at least at one time. I had a 300 with a twenty four originally, got it cheap for that reason. Twenty six is more common.
 
or just get a shilen drop in for the savage, mystic precision offers them... not too pricey and you get hell of a barrel.

edit: nevermind...they are 26 inches + for .308's
 
oh, when I ordered mine I didn't bother asking just went for the 26 because it was what was listed, there was a 22 incher but for under .283 or something like that...good to know. Then a shilen would be my choice without a doubt...you know your rifle is a tack driver and the better barrel would only improve on it...some people I know couldn't group MOA with a stock remmy...depends on which one you get maybe?
 
If you're looking at a shorter barrel for weight, how much weight would you save going 2" shorter? (Not much). If you want it for hunting, I use to have a 26" 35 Whelan. Several people said would be a problem to carry and aim in thick bush or heavy timber. It never got caught and was wonderful to point for shooting. Just wondering why you want a rifle with a barrel 2" shorter if this one has such good accuracy.

Whats the twist? if its 1-10 then you can cut it to 23" optimal, if its 1-12 then the optimal is 27". Why? Well... you would want at least 2 full rotations while its still inside the barrel to get the best accuracy possible, the extra 3" is to take into account the extra space needed for the chamber.

Thats the science behind it, but Id say you can cut it to about 20" at the least.

Yeah, i guess you're right i actually like the accutrigger and the stock. A few inches off the top won't really save me mich weight will it. Thanks everyone for setting me straight! She stays the same as she is from the factory :)
