opinion of MODEL 700™ VARMINT SF

looking at getting a new 308 (had a rem 700 tac forced to sell looking for something new now)

so i am looking at the 700 varmint sf

specs

caliber 308 Win
weighs 8.5 pounds
barrel length 26"
overall length 45 3/4"
barrel twist 12"

it is the model with the stainless steel barrel(fluted) / action

just wondering what are peoples views/opinions of this rifle ? it will be used for target shooting (just taking it to the range might take it hunting once or twice but mostly range use)

scope will be either a sightron scope or hawk optics or bushnell elite 6500... i have heard good reviews for all three brands but will ask more about them when adding a scope comes to play (one thing at a time)

5r is a little outa my price range(wanna buy this brand new it will be my first "brand new" rifle plus i wanted something with a 26 inch or longer barrel and i think the 5r only has a 22 or 24 inch (could be wrong)

as for being stainless steel how durable will it be?

The 5R is 24" and most wouldn't notice the difference in length except when carrying it around in the woods.

The stainless is in many ways more durable than the blued steel. Verry weather resistant and not any more prone to dings.

In my opinion the 5R comes with a much better stock too.

I think the price is only a $100.

I'd opt for the 5R. The stainless finish on the 5R is also bead blasted to get rid of the shine. 24" and they shoot right out of the box. Also 1:11.25 twist rate. Last but not least the stock with the 5R is better.

If you decided to change out the stock on the 5R you could sell it fairly easily and get some of the money back. Not going to happen with the SF. If you buy the SF and then decide to go with an HS stock your cost will be more than just buying the 5R from the beginning.

One last note. I have essentially the 223 version of the SF in the 700 VSSFII . Only it comes with the HS stock that the 5R has. I prefer the 5R. The fluted barrel is cool but the 5R length is better at 24" and I prefer the bead blasted finish without the flutes.

I'd think it over. Don't get me wrong that 26" fluted barrel looks cool. I have one in 223. But... I think overall you'd be happier with the 5R for your intended purposes. Better to save a bit more. They can be found new for $1200 sometimes a bit less.

Yup...I share the same opinion...5R Mil-Spec is the best value for a rifle that shoots very well.
Just buy it and go.....you may find with the SF that you want a stock upgrade, and as mentioned you'll spend more in the end. most guys are asking $300 for a clean HS take off stock.
If you're set on the 26" fluted...VSSF is the way to go.

well .. guess the 5r it will be then .. thanks guys ... with the 5r in 308 what grain projectile will i wanna shoot (getting into reloading as well)

168 SMK or 175 SMK. Buy a pack of 168 Federal Gold for sight in/practice. The 5R tends to really like those rounds. Use that as your base line before reloading.

I have the SPS Varmint (the lowest cost .308 heavy barrel platform) and it shoots very well. The stock is ugly but works fine. Highly recommended.

I am running the 26" factory 1-12, have stabilized everything I have fed it from 147 S&B to 210 VLD's, pet load being with 178 Amax's, love it. its getting swapped out for a Krieger in the winter here, but for factory, was very impressed, no issue ever maintaining under 1" with anything I tried once it was bedded and properly floated, had a broad range of .5's in plenty of ammo samples and if I was having a great day would drop into the area of .3's. I wouldn't hesitate for one second on taking one, I have a few friends with the same base for some builds and all have been great shooters to date. Wish you luck!
