Hi Guys,

What is your take on the M9 Beretta pistol as issued to US Forces....it has recieved some negative feed back due to the 9mm ball ammo it is chambered for.....there was a good article in Shotgun News in April on this pistol....but would like to hear from CGN's ....always find your input interesting and informative .

Beretta 92 is a great gun; mine has been 100% reliable with any factory ammo and reloads I shot thu it! It's a very accurate and smooth shooting pistol. If you have very small hands I would recommend 90-two with a slim grip or a used Vertec or Elite 1 model, but regular 92 model fits my medium size hands just fine... Oh and did I mention it looks great :)

Most recent negative feedback on the pistols in the field is magazine related. Though I am sure someone will be sure to start the 45 debate of stupidity. Also early issues where found with slide breakages but I havent heard of that in years so most likely it has been fixed. Good pistol just like the P226 more, and the navy SEALS agree.

LONG time ago US army used cheap aftermarket mags that jammed in the gun... if you use factory or mec-gar mags you won't have any problems.

Some of the very first guns had the locking wedges break, in a worst case scenario, the slide would exit the gun rearward on firing...metallurgy was changed, no more issue, and they check 'em for fatigue now.

^plus they changed the design so the slide can't fly back due to oversized hammer pin. But the whole slide braking in half and flying in shooters face is once of the most overblown rumors on the web; since it only happned a few times with older F models almost 10 years ago...

The M9 I was issued back in 89-92 (was reissued another after that) I must have put a thousand or more rounds through...never had an issue, the odd FTF or so, but attribute that to the ammo. Who knows what the gun plumbers were doing as far as gauging and replacing parts out of spec behind the scenes. but it was 100% reliable in my experiences...

Reliable semi automatic handgun. Earlier models had certain issues (that are mentioned above) that have been "corrected".
Keeping in mind that these weapons were used in very different environments ( than the majority of us will ever be exposed to) this is a variant of the Beretta 92 pistol.
Hundreds of thousands have been sold, millions of rounds fired - quite the testament.

I have a Beretta 96, a 92FS Inox, a Glock, a Walther and a Browning.
If I had to pick one to lay it on the line with...
Beretta wins hands down for many reasons.

Van PD switching out their Beretta 96Ds after a dozen years. Something about the life of the gun being around 10 years and the risk of slides cracking. Don't know if the M9 has the similar problem?

The M9 has a slightly reshaped grip and trigger-guard, also a different finish. The barrel bore and chamber are chrome-plated.

Not according to Beretta when I was at the factory in Accokeek, Maryland.

All 92's (and make no mistake about it, the M9 IS a 92) made have the same Epoxy finish. Forget the Ni plated etc.

over 2 milion actually...

92FS is basicaly the M9; I'm pretty sure the finish is the same and so is the trigger guard, but M9 doesn't have the retract the lise to se ef loaded warning on the dustcover/frame.

its fun to fire but i don't know if it would make a great LEO gun i think the glock still has it beat in that respect

the 96's suck. never should've been chambered in .40 (which sucks on it's own anyhow). but for 9mm you can't beat it, if it fits your hand.

Beretta

I've owned a few Beretta Model 92's over the years, back to the day when it first appeared in Canada. Them, the BHP and the S&W 59 were pretty much the only hi-cap 9mm's readily available back then. Every one I ever owned was reasonably accurate and reliable. Even with big hands the grip was just too table-leg like to me. I've since found that the CZ75/BHP's fit my hand better. I have yet to hold the newer slim-lined Beretta 9mm model with the more ergonomic grip, though. As stated the M9 would be a good choice if it fits your hand.

The problem with the slide breaking was traced to lots of over-pressure ammo supplied by Olin. This was confirmed in testing at Elgin AFB. Peak pressure was over NATO standards. The DoD was thus forced to compensate Beretta for the work they did redesigning the pistol.

Of course you never hear about this in Guns & Ammo, too many .45 lovers.

All FMJ pistol ammo is rubbish in terms of terminal ballistics compared to FMJ rifle ammo. This is why soldiers are usually armed with rifles instead of pistols.

If FMJ pistol ammo was so great everyone would still be using SMGs instead of assault rifles.
