opinion on 6x scope for gophers

I'll mount the 6x on my rifle and wait till next season to try it out.

Didn't realize it's an HMR. Again, I've never looked through that particular scope, but I've owned a Leopold VX3 and they have nice glass. However, I'm not sure I'd (personally) be content with a 6X on an HMR as I rely on mine to really reach out on gophers about 3/4 of the time. Not suggesting you go buy anything else, but, I know we got them past 200 yards with my HMR this spring and I have a hunch they'd look pretty small at that distance, @ 6X.

On another note~that bolt handle looks great. I'm going to look into those. I don't mind the SIZE of the bolt handle on my 452, but it tucks in tight to the stock when closed. That might remedy that minor imperfection in the 452s' design! :)

guys who use them claim the bolt speed reload is smoother & works nicer with the oversized handle installed, also fallow up shots in a match make for less speed / time when it matters.

I just tracked down a fixed 2.75x I've been after, but that's for pigeons at about 15-25 yards. Granted, eyes aren't what they once were...and I wouldn't bet $5 that the glass will be anywhere near as good as your V3!

I've never used a fixed magnification Leupold of any kind, but re: your 12x question...the 4-12x on my 22LR gopher gun stays on 12x most of the time. Closer gophers (30-40 yards or so) require some fiddling with the AO.

I really like fixed scopes, each to their own though. Over the last 35 years or so, I've primarily used fixed 6x or 8x on my gopher 22lr's. More recently I've found that 8x or 10x Leupolds have worked well on my HMRs. I can still find the closer targets with 8x and 10x, and they seem to do the job out to about 200 yards on gophers. I have had good luck with the Leupolds in 6x, 8x, 10x, and 12x, all AO scopes, as well as the older Burris fixed 6x AO compacts. Just my opinion.
