I just picked up a 500 S&w barrel and the threads for the forearm were stripped, while getting ready to rethread it I took a small pick to clean the hole and notice there was some junk in the bottom of the hole and it was drilled alot deeper than it appeared.

I had a 12g rifled barrel that the scope mount holes were drilled too deep from the factory, you could see where the holes were from inside the barrel from a discolouration in the rifling. I called T/C sevice dept and they said it was common on some of the 12g barrels and it was screwed. had a hell of a time getting a replacement because it was at the same time as the move to S&W and they were not sending anything to Canada. hope things work out for you. they did give me a 20g rifled barrel for replacement and it's awesome, have it sighted out to 200yards and can keep 3 shot groups in a 6" circle.

S&W has a lifetime warranty, but I'm guessing there's more to this story. Did you buy the gun used? Did the previous owner have a drill press and a banjo? Now, the rest of the story...

Just shoot it. There are many factory barrells out in circulation with iron sight holes drilled too deep, most owners never notice.

I'm sure these holes are original, the sides of the holes are shinny from stripping out but the bottom of the hole is dark and "old metal", I didn't even think about warranty, if that doesn't work out what are the chances of a catastrophic failure?

I did some research and looks like it wouldn't be much of an issue as long as there's a bolt in the hole to plug it, many people are firing rifles with sight holes drilled too deep or right through with no issue.

Talk to a good and I mean good gunsmith and get his answer on the holes,it might be ok in a shot gun barrel, low preasure but in a rifle cal or caliber pushing 50 thou preasure.I once had a smith tell me that he would not rechamber my 358 barrel to 350 mag because the scope base holes would be to close to the high preasure chamber. And he is a good gun smith with over 25 years experience.
Just my 2 cents.
