I am looking to start getting into precision and looked at the 700p in 308.Specifically the 700P TWS package that comes with scope bipod and everything.

Too bad I have heard the package is not available in Canada, banned export.
The main reason is I have no idea how to install and modify it myself if I got the parts seperately. Now, I guess I have no choice but to learn and built something nice and it has to look nice. Prefer the military look. 50 bmg is kind of out of my price range right now. Suggestions??

Thanks

Look in For Sale section there are few Remy 700's and 700 P's as well

What is actually the difference between the 700 series. Is the police version more accurate?

Nothing mechanically - same barrel as varmint rifles.

700P is parkerized, rest are either blued or black finish.

Stock specific to it is an HS precision with bedding block, vs. cheaper stocks of the sps or tactical which has the Hogue.

HTH, Carl

The police version is no more accurate. They are all based on the same action but have different calibres, barrels, stocks etc. The accuracy in the 700p models is based on the heavy barrel (more heat dispersion) and HS Precision Stock.

You could by a 700 Varmint in 308 and have the same setup minus the stock and either use that stock or buy a different stock.

I have tried both the 700P barrels, and the 700VS barrels. They are both equally accurate. The stocks are slightly different. It is an individual choice as to what you prefer.

Now I get it, the only difference is just the barrel and stock. I see shooting edage has HS Precision HTR rifles for $3,900. What is so special about it compared to a 700 for about 1,000. Is it worth the money?

Try the Remington 700 VSF. Aluminum bedded, fluted barrel and designed as a target rifle (although it's a varminter). Although you'll have to face the shame of not having the word "Tactical" or "Police" in it (j/k!), it looks like a good shooter and ought to be available up here.

I have a 700P in .308, my brother has a 700sps varmint. Mine is more accurate, the bedded HS precision stock makes the difference. I went to the range recently, this is a 5 shot group with my 700P, I can shoot these groups consistantly. The gun has a 4.5-18x Falcon Menace, and I shoot 168gr Hornady HPBT with 44 gr if IMR4064.

How far did you shoot the groups from? Guess the stock makes the huge difference. But is is worth $2,000? The HS Precision HTR rifles is almost 4 grand. What else is in that price?

So, you vant a suggestion, eh?

Get a Ruger 10/22, mod it including a target barrel.
Enjoy.
You will learn more, quickly, that way than with anything else, and it's a quack of a lot cheaper.

You can make it look meaner than military.

That is from 100 yards. The rifle itself can be had for around 1200, withscope, rings, base etc, your looking at around 1800.

THE HS Precision rifles have different actions, much higher quality barrels, tactical mag systems and HS stocks of course. TOTALLY DIFFERENT gun than a Remington 700. For a first rifle just a 700 with whatever options you want should do good. The VTR was mentioned, SPS varmint, LTR. They are all good rifles and would make a good beginners rifle. Down the road you can get a gunsmith to spin on a new barrel and stock and mag system or whatever you want.

$1,800 does not seem too bad. In my price range. What kind of scope should I get? I like to put a bipod on it too, just like the looks of it. Is it an easy install?

Thanks for the advice. I will stick with a 700 and learn first.

The bipod is very important for me for accuracy. Its a stable front rest. I used the bipod for the front, and a bag as a back rest . They attatch to a sling swivel stud. That is why the remington 700P has to front swivel studs, one for a sling, one for a bipod!

I get it now. So if I buy the rifle, rings, scope and bipod. Can I just easily install everything myself, or do I require a gunsmith or someone with expertise to put everything together.

Thanks

For a beginners target scope Bushnell 3200 in the straight 10x with target turrets and mil-dots is a good choice. They float around the EE for usually $200 or so.
