Opinion on first precision rifle

For a beginners target scope Bushnell 3200 in the straight 10x with target turrets and mil-dots is a good choice. They float around the EE for usually $200 or so.

I checked the SPS 308 is about 700 bucks, for the 10x bushell scope, what is the max range i can shoot with that? Looks like $1,200 should do for the whole package. What do you recommend for a decent bipod

definitely go with a harris bipod for something fairly affordable. There are cheaper ones(rockmount etc) but I have personally had 2 rockmounts fall apart on me, they dont like any recoil in my experience. I haven't had a problem with my Harris bipods!

Do you know carries the Harris bipods? Btw, how are the nightforce scopes and the prices? I heard they are the ones that military uses.

how are the nightforce scopes and the prices
The nightforce scopes are very expensive, if you can find one. A more affordable option is the Falcon line of scopes.Allen gunworks carries them(one of the sponsors at the top of the page). This is what I have on my 700P, it is a nice scope for the price(around 400 dollars)

Are the NF worth the money though? Or I am paying a lot for the name, a scope is a scope and I expect them to all function the same?

I've got an SPS Varmint in .308. Right now I've got 'er shooting .5 MOA at 100 yards and 1 MOA at 200 with factory Remington 150gr cartridges. I'm actually surprised it is shooting this well with cheap ammo...

Reminds me... I should probably clean it now!

In a word YES they are. The Falcons are decent for the money but do not come even in the same ballpark as NF scopes do, in optical clarity, repeatability and ruggedness. You will never out grow a NF scope.
Have you looked at the Savage LE series rifles. They are right up in the same type of rifle as the 700P both in look, function and are very accurate.

The only advantage I see that the Remingtons have over the Savage is when you want to build up further as your skill demands. The 700s have more parts available at the moment than the Savages do, but they are improving each year.

By the way we have 700Ps and the Savage LE line in stock along with a ton of NF product, it is not hard to find, you just need to know where to look.

Definatley not paying for a name on the night force. Great glass, clearer than cheaper scopes and built very well. Can take a beating...ie...being shot, rolling down mountains (mine did) and they still work, have 2 and love them. Not sure what the comment about ...if you can find them...is all about as there are a number of shops that have a regular stock. Alberta tactical rifle gets new scopes in every 2 weeks. What is your budget that your looking for for your entire setup. The rem700 sps's are good but the stocks are junk....if your go that route, upgrade that first and have a gun smith bed the rifle. Thats where you are going to see the most accurizing results.

What that meant was, I'm not sure where to find them.
Obviously if you have the money for it, a high end scope like a Nightforce is the way to go.But if you dont have it in your budget right now, the Falcons are good for the price. My gun case went flying out the back of my Van on the way to the range about a month ago at 80kms an hour, hit the pavement hard, the scope is fine, no problems. So it can take a beating too. The Bushnell Elite scopes are also pretty decent for what you pay. It all depends on what you can afford!

If you don't mind me asking how the hell does that happen
Actually, There was a loose bolt that had rolled down to the lift gate latches shut. So the rear lift gate was not closed properly.Pretty easy to happen the way that my uplander is designed. For the illegal storage comment, the case was locked, and I was on my way to the range. (which means that a lock isnt even required, as I was in transport). Please, let me know the proper way to transport.Where the hell did "illegal storage" come from? I hope you were kidding!

Investing in a good quality scope is the best money you will ever spend. Nobody ever sells a nightforce to go into a bushnell. If you look at the serious f-class shooters, better than half are using nightforce. The remainer are using Leupold or other high-end scopes. There are a few older B&L's but not many.

The falcon is apparently a pretty good entry level scope and if you need the busy mil-dot reticles, I guess they are as good as any. Shooters trying for maximum accuracy magnification, and repeatability go for ultra-clear optics and ultra-repeatable mechanics = Nightforce.

When it comes to optics, you DEFINITELY get what you pay for.

My initial budget was $3K, but seems like I can get everything a lot cheaper, so why not. Can you suggest the best setup possible for my budget?

Thanks
