I am trying to decide if I want to use some shooting sticks during this year's deer hunt. I am hunting an area that is a mixture of open prairie and bluffs of trees. I'm am considering bringing them along for times when I'm walking the perimeter of the bluffs, standing on point or open prairie shots. I won't be taking them out of the truck for pushing bush.

My plan would be to carry them in hand as I walk and when time permitting set them up for the shot. If a quick shot presents itself I'd just drop them and shoot off hand or in a kneeling position.

I've never used shooting sticks before...are they really handy? Does my idea of carrying and using if time permitting sound alright or would they be a real pain to carry them around all the time?

Open country they work pretty well, wooded areas they are mostly a PITA. I've tried singles, doubles and (in Africa) triples. They do stabilise well, so for a long shot they are helpful, just annoying to tote. A single staff/hiking stick with a leather loop attached is probably the easiest to work with, for movement, but the least stable. Still better then off hand, though. - dan

I would plan on carrying them only when in open areas. The open prairie shots will be from 150-250 range. I just wonder how much of a PITA they'll be carrying them around.

When in tree'd areas and around fence lines and that finding a nice stable rest is no problem but thinking the sticks would be nice for those open shots where I can't find a nice steady rest anywhere. I'm considering the bipod type sticks as opposed to mono and tri.

They are standard equipment for our group, hunting deer and coyotes in the same terrain you describe. Most of us carry two joined sticks, for a bipod style rest from kneeling or sitting, but I normally carry a single and rest the fore end on my outstretched thumb while gripping the pole. But Heiner39, it is kinda ridiculous to ask other people for their opinion about how much YOU will find carrying the sticks a PITA. Home made sticks cost nothing. Try it yourself.

for the past five or six years, I have not gone hunting without my Stoney Point steady Stix...they're awesome. I would highly reccomend them

If you build your own, you could always include a handle to hang them off your belt..... I especially like using a spoon as per Varmint Al's specs... :D try this site for more info.

I certainly don't think it's "rediculous" to ask others about their opinion on carrying sticks and if they'll be a PITA. Perhaps I didn't word it correctly...just asking man that's all. Never carried them and don't have any buddies that carry them so I wanted to see if anyone does carry them or if they're a PITA.

Doesn't hurt to ask does it?
