Opinion on STI Edge

I'm considering buying an STI Edge to shoot IPSC with and am looking for peoples opinion on the gun. I've owned several single stack 1911's in the past including 2 Colt gold cup national match pistols and a Valtro. As far as quality, tightness, accuracy etc. the Valtro was the best 1911 I've owned. I realize the Edge is a double stack gun and I am not interested in the differences in grip but more looking at how it shoots, quality, and so on. All opinions are welcome but if you own an Edge and can compare it's qualities versus other nice 1911, 2011 pistols that would be appreciated. Thanks.:)

I have heard good reviews (I have not tried the pistol) also the Trusight model. True target pistols. Some of the local folks use them at our IPSC matches.
You might want to check with Sean @ Freedom Ventures - I think he shoots with one (I know he is the Canadian distributor) - but his input is certainly worthwhile.

The advantages over a 1911 such as the muzzle heavy full dustcover & huge magwell makes them hard to beat in IPSC standard. Everyone I know (myself included) who has gone from a single stack to an Edge has improved their game. Fit, finish & overall quality are awsome.

Thanks, and nice pic.. I'm looking at getting a .40 with a second barrel and heavier recoil spring for 10mm.

I have considered the same. Nothing would be cooler than shooting 10mm at an IPSC match, even if it is loaded down to 170pf. :D

The closest comparison would be an SVI which will cost you twice as much and possiibly take twice as long to get. Having said that you have a lot more options to choose from when SVI builds you a gun. The Edge is pretty much what you see, you can switch the finish or the sights, the Eagle can be built up with more options like a tri-topped slide or just a flat top. The Edge is a hell of a gun for the price, it's the basic meat and potatoos Limited/Standard gun. The modular grip allows you to shape it fit your hands instead of getting used to the factory grip. Fit finish and reliability out of the box are all high quality. I prefer the size of The STI/SVI grip over my Para, I find it fills my hand better. The extended dust cover and full profile slide versus the standard lenghht dust cover and traditional slide isreally just a preference issue. Some people prefer the recoil imluse of one setup over the other. The best thing would be to try a few different setups if possible and find what you like the best.

I am with OKDave. :) :)
I bought mine (stock STI EDGE Chrome it is - no extra tweaks) February of last year. I have put between 15-17K major rounds through it with no malfunction in any of the internal parts. The only part I have replaced so far is the elevation screw of the rear sight, which broke into half, but was covered by Freedon Ventures under the STI warranty. The STI EDGE is one of the most accurate handgun I have ever used. The slide to frame fit, smoothness and accuracy of this gun is like a dream to shoot.

If only I could be in the same situation again choosing of buying my 16-yr old son a Standard gun.... I will in NO DOUBT buy him an STI EDGE. I bought him a Para Ltd instead (I have nothing against Para-they are great guns), but I spent a lot of extra $$s just for his Para Ltd. to be at least at the "Level" of functionality of a good IPSC Gun... BIG MISTAKE!!!

I'm maybe overstating this statement, but I will say it anyway. You get the pride and your money's worth when shooting STI EDGE.
I am very please with the quality and reliability of this gun. :) :) If you have the $$$, go for it. I highly reommend this baby.

Good luck and enjoy it... you will never regret it.:)

Cheers! :D :D

Gunnar at Armco (see link at top of page) tweaks the STI Edge into an "Enhanced Edge". If I ever decide to get into standard division, this would be the gun I would buy.

Thanks for the nice pics and great info guys, I'm set on an Edge for sure. Since he's fairly local I think I'll get a tweaked Edge from Gunnar at Armco. I look forward to getting and shooting the thing in the next few months. I'll probably be trading in my 10mm G20 with lots of mods, extra KKM barrels, etc. towards the Edge.

I don't shoot 1911s, so maybe the answer to this is pretty self evident for people who do.... where does the higher cost come from for an Edge compared to something like a Trojan?

Different frame make up, modular vs a mill spec, edge has a bull barrel vs a bushing in the trojan, the mag which the gun comes with is 3 times the price. The Edge comes with ambi stainless safties the trojan has a single sided blued safety. Edge has a stainless
beavertail, trojan is blued. Edge has a recoil master the trojan does not. The edge comes with a magwell, trojan does not.

757 For what it's worth my 2 cents.

I have a Para Limited (Stainless) and STI Edge (Blue in 40 cal). The difference? The para is a gun that you have to spend $$$ on to get to the same level that the Edge comes out of the box.

The Para comes from the factory with some side to side slide movement and will loosen up pretty quickly , the Edge has no dicernable side to side play in the slide and I've had 7-8K rounds through mine and it's just started to have a small amount of play in the slide - still less than the Para out of the box mind you.

A more crucial area is the vertical lock up at the back of the barrel which has a big effect on accuracy - the stock Para barrel will shift noticably under thumb pressure. The STI has no discernable play even after all the use mine has had.

The Para hammer is milled in a interesting way - I assume to reduce costs. But if you are going to do a trigger job you junk it and buy a 'proper' one. That's another $60 before you start. The STI internals are all top notch. It comes out of the box with a 3.5lb pull. The 'tuned' variants will have had this cleaned up a bit too ;-)

To sum up - Para Limited, trigger job, new Clark custom match barrel and FO front sight = same cost as STI edge out of the box.

Having said that my Para is as good as the STI from an accuracy and trigger pull perspective, (everywhere apart from slide fit) but I brought the STI anyways. Para's have cheaper mags (mine are all-steel Pro-Mags, cheaper than Para factory mags and one-piece steel bodies).

Given the choice when I leave for the range I pick the STI, it really is a great piece of engineering - anyone want to buy a Para Limited??
;-)

Too late when I realized the above choice in my son's Para.
:) :) Well said Onthebeep.
