Opinion on Vortex viper pst 6-24x50

I am looking to purchase the above scope to put on my .340 Weatherby for long range hunting (up to 600 yds). Looking for opinions good/bad on the suitability of this scope for this application. I have no experience with Vortex scopes and looking for opinions on whether they will take the recoil, whether the adjustments track accurately and consistently. Are there any other scopes in this price range that you would recommend?

I use the 4-16 for 1k yards on a .308. I will be 100% honest the scope picture isn't super duper crisp on max power(I don't go above 12 for the most part) so I would assume it would be worse on the 6-24. However, that being said I'm very satisfied with how the scope performs. I've used it for hunting and target shooting and am very satisfied.
 
I have the FFP version on my 6x47L. On a good day, I can make out 6mm holes in white paper at 500m.

Sightron is in the same price range and also make excellent scopes.
 
I like mine and I have put it to the test. It is accurate, repeatable, and considering I dropped one and they repaired it for free, I can't complain.

Look at the zeiss conquest hd5 5-25x50. Way better glass as far as clarity and eye relief. It is 2nd focal plane however, not FFP. My advice is try a few in stores, you ll see which one suits you best.
 
I have looked through the Viper PST 6-24x50 and thought the clarity was good. I am more concerned with its ability to track consistently or will it shake loose at this recoil level. I hate taking a scope off a gun once it is sighted-in. I would like to hear if people have used them on hard recoiling guns without issues.

Though I don't have personal experience with the PST model, I do have the 6-24x50 HST, which is the same scope but without the illuminated reticle and the FFP option. I am very happy with the performance of it and so far, I've shot to 670 yards accurately with my 7mm rem mag. I haven't had a problem with tracking at all with mine and I shoot a Tikka T3 Superlite, which is a punishing gun to sit down and put a box through. I have the 6-24 PST FFP and am immensely impressed with its optical capabilities. I use it on a target/varmint rifle that I don't need to do much carrying or walking with. It would be a crapload of scope to have to carry around on any kind of a "mobile" hunting rifle.

My thoughts exactly... great target scope, but 4-16 is plenty for hunting and a bit smaller, lighter.
 
I had a used PST FFP scope and I was kinda happy with it at first.
First owner had a problem with it, sent it to the company for warranty repair.
They sent him another scope, which is the one I bought.
Vortex have a good warranty and its a good thing because you might need it at some point.
I never trusted this scope and sold it, absolutely no regrets.

Then I bought a Sightron SIII FFP and IMO its a better scope for almost the same price.

Vortex was a good option when they were selling for around 850$.
Now alot of people ask crazy prices for them, its not worth it imo.

These days, you better buy a used Leupold Mk4 or a Sightron than a Vortex.
 
I was minutes away from buying the Vortex the OP mentioned. I just wanted to look at a few other options in that price range that were FFP. Once I looked through the Burris Veracity 4-20x50 I was hooked. Normally I would rate Burris as a middle of the road product but they stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park with the Veracity. Glass clarity is better than the Vortex especially at the higher end of magnification. The clarity was as on par with the Sightron SIII I looked through in comparison.

Vortex Viper is a really good scope for the money and yes the warranty is great but for the price I was paying at the time, there was no comparison when looking at overall quality. Sadly the Veracity which cost $1,000 last year is now $1,500. That being said the Vortex has also gone up in price as everything else in the shooting world thanks to the dollar.
 
Yes, I would second taking a look through a Veracity.

The prices just jumped pretty much everywhere (but in line with all the other US scopes on the market) but I still find them to have great value for the money.

I have the lower power Veracity (2-10X42) - They put some thought into the reticle for an FFP scope and one look through it blew away the competition - which there isn't much at Burris' price point.

The 3-15X50 FFP Veracity is just on 1000 bucks "after" the price was adjusted for our crappy buck. And despite the above comment, you can find the 4-20X50 version at one of our national chain stores that might be better known for selling crappy tires for just on 1100 bucks - and that is the "increased price", they were 900 a few weeks ago.

The Veracity line of FFP scopes is pretty much un-known and certainly under rated. Take a look through one and you will probably be sold.

PS - Burris also has an awesome warranty - no receipt, no registration and "no fault", so even if you drop the rifle and bust the scope, they will repair or replace "free of charge" - There is simply no "better" warranty offered out there - some the same, but no better.

Hey if anyone can find a Veracity 4-20x50 at $1,100......buy it. More power to you. It is $1,450 at most Burris dealers I have recently checked out. Yes I myself forget that the odd CT store does carry higher end products from time to time and that is a very fair price.

If you take the time to do some searches on Veracity reviews, you will quickly find it was product of the year on many lists in the US when it came to value and performance. Again, extremely happy with this product.

The only possible problem I see with the Burris is the resale value but I might be wrong.

Used market is better these days. There is tons of mint and fair priced scopes in the EE.
 
^^^ I would agree. Burris and their sister company Steiner are not "well recognized, sought after scopes" in the Canadian market at this time. Value and quality has nothing to do with that, they just don't get the exposure that other brands do.

But I'm kinda glad of that. If they were coveted like Leupold they would probably be far more expensive than they are.
 
North prospects.com has a Burris Veracity 4-20 on for 1000$ right now. And Sylvester sporting goods has a 3-15 on for $799. Just a heads up.

Good prices on Ziess and other optics at Sylvesters. $900 for some Ziess scopes.
 
I have a Vortex viper PST 4-16 FFP in Milrad

I realy like it, it clear at all magnifications, its taken a few good wacks and holds zero, put a lot of rounds down range with it mounted. Its been on 3 guns now.

10/22, put a couple bricks down range
moved to the FAMEA 542 saw a few hundred rounds
Moved to my Savage 111 LRH in .338 seen about 250 rounds, no issue.

I bought it when they were listed at $999, now they are list what $1200 USD?

I don't think the value is there anymore for most vortex scopes, with the increase in price it now puts you into range of better companies... look at the new razors, they cost us much as a night force.
 
I went through this last year and ended up with a bushnell elite tactical 6-24x50. Clearer than a vortex pst, it's ffp, mine has the g2 reticle which I like. The only minor downside which isn't a problem for me is the non-locking turrets.
