Opinion on Winchester vs Federal primers

Anybody have any significant comparative knowledge about these in small pistol, large pistol and large pistol magnum sizes? Good or bad experiences? Sorry if this might have been addressed previously.

Federal primers are made of a softer metal, they take up more space to store. As far as ignition, they rate about the same. I believe they are not reccomended for Lee handheld auto-primers. As a general statement they seem to be perfered primer for revolver as they require a softer hit and the hammer spring can be reduced. Generally in this part of the country thhey are priced higher than Winchester and not so available.

I use moslty Federal primers, they seem to be pretty consistent. Es;ecially the Match primers, which I mostl;y use.

Winchester wins the price war. I have not had a miss fire with either of these brands. And the Winchester seem to easier to load. Got Federal Match on the bench now, but Winchester is also part of my loadings.

Used either with no complaint, Federal are shiny, being close to a crow I like that. but either will work.

Used both with no problems. As mentioned, a gun with a light hitting firing pin may like Federal better.

This is very subjective but the only difference seam that Federal are the softest, followed by Winchester and the other end of the spectrum, in the hard corner ; the CCI nickel plated primer.

I buy what is the cheapest in 5000 lot and Winchester win hand down each time !

I use the Winchester primers for everything except my 308 Win. target ammo. For that I use the Federal match primers.

Just wonderin', how do the large magnum rifle primers rate in terms of hot ignition? Is Remington at the bottom of the heap, Winchester at top and everyone else in between?

I have had issues with Winchester Small pistol primers, but never with Federal.

CCI (rifle) and Federal (rifle and pistol) are all I use, but I will use Winchester shotgun primers.
