l am going to purchase a new rifle for hunting. l have narrowed it down to one of these rifles. l would like an honest opinion from owners as to pros, cons of these rifles. lnterested in fit finish, accuracy, bolt action {smooth, ect}.
Reliability and Durability, shell feeding, ejecting, ect.
Any info would be appreciated.

I own a rem 700 sps-dm in 30-06. It is a "MOD" shooter (minute of deer). Have never had a problem with it in extreme weather.

Have you decided which cartridge?
This may affect your choice.

I've had a Rem 700 SPS [floorplate model] in .30-06 and a Ruger MkII blued/wood stock in 6.5x55mm. Liked 'em both. For the money I think I'd go with the Rem SPS again. Personally, don't care for the DM model as I don't need it. Might consider a SPS stainless in 7mm-08 if I was going to buy a new one again. The only Ruger MkII rifle I'd consider new at this point would be either .260 Rem or 7mm WSM.

For fit and finish, the SPS will not be as nice as the ruger, but might be a tad lighter if it really matters. My buddy has one he bought off the site here a few years ago in 270, and its considerably lighter than both of mine.
Its a very very confortable rifle to carry, and a relative of mine has been carrying a "Boatpaddle"MkII in 7mm mag for 12 odd years, and I dont think he'd give it up for the world.
I've got a semi HB M77 in 25-06, and a 338Win mag MkII stainless with a hogue stock.
Out of the box, the ruger will shoot as well as the SPS, and Well guess there is no other and. :);)
I just like the rugers better personally.

Here are my two...

Sorry, l'm looking at a 308 or 30-06 synthetic.

Hard choice... But I'd go with the Rem 700 SPS and use the money saved towards a scope. Probably would put a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm on it...

'Course, you are looking at the DM version of the SPS? 'Cause if I was really on a budget looking for a synthetic I'd opt for the Stevens 200 in .308 or .30-06...;)

Have you seen the Mossberg ATR Stainless Synthetic? It is available in 30-06 for $369, IIRC. That is a fine price for a SS rifle.

With respect to the rifles you are looking at, it may be worth noting that the Remington has a large amount of aftermarket parts available, which is nice if you want to customize in the future.

i have a stainless ruger in 308 and would be my choice. mine has the canoe paddle stock, could probably beat an animal to death wth it. ugly but durable. good shooter too.

I have the sps in .300 win mag.. DM.. I like the gun, I havent found a bullet that won't shoot under an inch. The DM has a rattle to it when there is no bullets in it, but is tight when loaded. the new limb saver recoil pad they put on the guns really seems to help.

my 2 bits

Ruger is my first choice:D One of the toughest & most reliable actions made. I have a MkII stainless 7MM Mag, very accurate. Between .308 & 30-06 I would pick 30-06 (just a personal choice) it does have a little more "bang" on bigger game. Probably the best & most popular all around caliber made :D

I own rugers and a rem... the Rugers are my hunting rifles. The rem is a pita that I use for longrange comp and if I could get the accessories for the Rugers that I can get for the Rem I'd dump the rem and be all Ruger.

I just went through the same exercise , and I went with the Rem 700 DM in300 Win Mag as a dedicated Mulie rifle. Why , detachable mag , cost , accuracy , aftermarket scope mounts , easy to carry , did I mention accuracy. " My " Rugers were never that accurate, but that's all I can say about Ruger , they do alot with their rifles that I like. NAA has good sence arguement.
