Hello all.

Im looking to buy a scope for a 300 weatherby magnum. Five hundred is all i can spend, I want a 4x12x40 and have narrowed my choices down to the following:

Leupold vx 1 or 2
Nikon monarch 3
Redfield revolution

I would like to hear from all of you as to their experience with these scopes or perhaps another contender that meets my criteria.

Personally I would stay away from the redfield. I can speak on behalf of the revolution but as a previous revenge owner there product is poorly made and even though they are now owned by Leupold there customer service on regards to there "life time warranty" is junk. I was cleaning my remington 700 sps varmint in .204 Ruger (low recoil) the other day and noticed a slight rattle in the scope. Upon further inspection I discovered a shattered inner lense. The gun was always in a hard case when I wasn't shooting at the range off of a bipod or coyote hunting from a blind. The lady I talked to was disgusted that I would question why this happened and will I be covered under the waranty and wasn't even sure of where I was to send the scope. I say I was a previous owner because if I do recieve a replacement scope back under waranty sometime down the road I will be ditching it. Maybe I am one of the few with a poor review but it was a big let down as I do own 2 pairs of redfield binoculars and they are very reasonable for the price.

A Redfield revenge is about as good as a Bushnell Banner.....

OP, the VX-1 / 2 would be my first choice, the Nikon is very nice optically but I find the scope itself to be a little "chunky" in profile.
 
i have the Leupold vx2, its not bad, its got ok glass from my perspective...i have a buddy who has the Nikon monarch 3 and i find it has a better glass quality then the VX, its seems to bring in more light.
 
the Nikon is a great unit for the price, the VX1/2 are considerably smaller in footprint

if those were my choices I would go Nikon, and then Leupold and not even consider Redfield in the same group
 
Anything over 10x and most will agree that side focus or adjustable objective becomes desirable... so skip the Leupold vx1 and go directly to the vx2. Nikons are nice too though. I think you should consider Vortex too.
 
Thank you one and all! I did check out Vortex Diamond Back but found white hazing at high magnification. I've think ill go Nikon, would rather to be at high end of their line up than the low end of Leupolds.
 
I would look through a Zeiss Terra also, they have some nice glass for the price point. If you want to use the rifle in harsh condition the Leupold VX 1 would be my first choice due to the ability of using the aluminum covers from Leupold.
 
Id wouldnt buy any of those and buy a Burris Fullfield II, they are a solid scope for the money. They have great glass for a sub $500 optic, great reticle and warranty thats just as good as Vortex.
 
For sure the first on your list on the VX 2.
Or wait a bit and scour the EE and move up a notch or two on used.
Don't forget Leupold's warranty.
I recently bought a VarX II and paid a decent handsome reward.
I figured I'm buying future upgrades if it should grrrnade.
 
I have a nikon prostaff 5 scope- I compared it to the Monarch in the store and to be honest I couldn't tell the difference. YMMV... My only complaint is the reticle is a little chunkier than I would prefer- but I knew that going in and it isn't really that bad. If you consider the Monarch, consider the prostaff 5 for a little less money- it has been good to me so far.
 
Leupold VX2 would definitely be my choice. The Nikon scopes have slightly better optical clarity and brightness, but this is offset by the hefty weight, half a pound more than a Leupold in the same magnification class. To carry that extra weight for very marginal improvements in optical properties isn't worth it, especially considering your budget. Additionally, the Leupold has almost 1" more eye relief than the Nikon, giving you a very generous 4.9" to ensure you don't accidentally whack yourself with a heavy recoiling magnum rifle. ;)
 
The one thing about burris compared to vortex... is I personally have not heard of people using the warranty. Which to me is worth 100x more than something that needs to be fixed more often.
