Opinion: Ruger Mark III vs Browning Buckmark

I am preparing for the moment when my PAL is approved. I have three areas of interest: handgun target, rifle target and trap. I am already set to receive a trap shotgun from my father's collection since he is now hunting only. Now I am thinking about handguns, specifically .22s. I hope this is the right forum (no specifics on the type of guns in the description). I am undecided between the Ruger Mark III (or a used Mark II) and a Browning Buckmark. Any sage advice/preferences out there? Is it wise to ask?

I like the Ruger 22’s and have a 22/45, mine is used to supervise new shooters for the shoots they require to get an ATT from our club. Being a 22 the recoil is low, the 22/45 has a bull barrel so it is accurate, and being a 22 it is cheap to shoot. They really require little to no maintenance and cleaning.
I find the Ruger 22 and the Browning Buckmark are not true target guns. If you want to take it up a notch buy a Browning Medalist, S&W model 41, S&W model 17, High Standard Supermatic Tournament, etc. But as you are starting out a collection I would not recommend spending a lot on your first 22. Yes first, you will buy many more.
 
The Rugers are great guns, at least the MK11s were, that being said my Buckmark is without a doubt thee most accurate handgun I have owned short of the Medalist, which is a true target pistol. The H.S. Victor also in that dept is incredibly good, but for just over $300.00 the Buckmark is REAL hard to beat.
 
I have shot them both and my preference would go to the Buckmark for a slightly better trigger and fantastic fiber sight and grips on the URX model.

Second to that would be the Smith & Wesson 41 ..as previously mentioned. I have (2) and older vintage one and a brand new 41.. wonderful shooters..

But I would not refuse a Ruger, if one came my way with a Hogue grip they feel and shoot just fine... a little more trouble to clean though..
 
i currently have i think its 7 22 cal pistols.

gsg 1911-22
S&W M&P 22
buckmark pratical URX
ruger 22/45 lite
S&W 422
(and a couple wheel guns, but those arnt what we are after here)

the GSG i got to help me with my 1911 shooting on the cheap.
same with the S&W M&P 22, i have the full sized ones in 9, 40 and 45 so i use to train in the cheap.
both fantastic guns.

but we are after the ruger vs buckmark here.
both are fantastic guns!

but if i had to recommend one over the other, especially for a new shooter it would hands down be the Browning.
dont get me wrong, LOVE the ruger, but its a lego gun.
it comes base out of the box.
no trimmings.
so you need to add fiber optic sites.
you need to pick up a compensator (for looks, but a must!)
and you need to get some Hogue grips for it.

OR

you pick up a browning and they come with fiber optic sites right out of the box plus they have FANTASTIC URX grips right on them (if you get the right model) so you dont need to do anything to it right out of the box other then shoot it.

and the browning is a bulls-eye killer, i can chew the center out of a target with mine.

not as flashy as the ruger but are you going for flash or all around.

gun comes with the top rail, i dont run it or the red dot on it, just the stock fiber optics.

What style of gun do you think you may be moving on to afterwords? If you are thinking of 1911's, then a Ruger 22/45 would be a good choice. There are a lot of aftermarket parts for it if you like to tinker and I do like that you can field strip and clean it without tools (the Buckmark needs a hex wrench).
 
When I was in the same situation, I found a couple of guys at the range who had them. I tried both and ended up buying the Ruger. Both are great guns but the Ruger just seemed that much more "gun".

I have never regretted my choice but soon I will likely have both.
 
Just bought a new Ruger Mark III Target. If the ATT happens soon, I'll tell you how it shoots. I'm predicting acceptable results.
