Opinion time on these three 1911's

I had the same choice to make a couple years ago.There were 5 1911's in front of me on the counter.I went with the S&W,and have been very satisfied with it.The ext extractor is no big deal to me.After almost 2000 rounds its been flawless.
You cant really go wrong with any of your choices,they are all decent guns

If you get the option, try gripping one with checkered frontstrap and one without. To some, it doesn't make a difference but it's one feature that's a "must have" for me. I can overlook external extractor and series 70/80 but a 1911 without a checkered frontstrap just feels naked to me. If I'm going to use it in competition, front slide serrations is also a feature I'd want. I guess if it were me, that would narrow it down to the S&W model. I ended up with a Sig instead. Though my Sig doesn't have front slide serrations. :p
 
I've handled the Ruger and S&W in the stores. Both were impressive for fit and finish with the nod going to S&W by only a slight amount. What put me off is the non traditional external extractor. But for fit and finish if tradition isn't an issue the S&W over Ruger.

What would put me off is if any warranty work was needed. I constantly read about long delay times for guns sent into Murray Charleton for warranty work. Not trying to lay blame and it may be issues with getting parts out of S&W stateside. But the wait times are still up there if the gun should need to go back.

Ruger is somewhat better in that regard from what I've read.

The Colts I've handled tend to be a trifle more loose than these other two. They still shoot great, just have a little more rattle to them. But then it also has the prancing pony stamped into the metal and that counts for something even if it's just the fact that it's THE gun made by THE original maker. That tugs at the heart strings a bit.

I was a little surprised by the Ruger pricing as well. I would have guessed that they were a $800-ish gun.

....then again, I just checked and my STI Trojan that was $1450 at full retail a couple of years ago now lists for $2248 .:eek:

When the Ruger 1911 first hit the shelves, they were $750.
 
I'd say Colt unless you decide to look at a SIG. They're really nicely put together.

I'm also really sorry to hear about your store closing. What upper management has done to that franchise honestly disgusts me.
 
For me, clearly the Colt wins ( out of the 3 you propose ) and people at ARMS EAST are very nice to deal with.

ya i picked up my SR1911 for $700 and for that money it is a hell of a gun.
my SR1911 CMR cost me $100 more and still a hell of a gun for that price.
now they come out with a SR1911 in 10mm and i want it soooooooooooo bad but i can bring myself to pay $1200 for it.
not yet anyways.......
