Opinion time on these three 1911's

Without getting into a debate about which one is the best, those are all within $100 of each other down here. The S&W is the best deal just judging based on price down here. They're like $800, the Rugers are $700ish, and the Colts are about $750

The 1911s I've had, or still have are a nighthawk, a sig, an S&W 1911 TA-E and a nork sport. I sold the S&W, not because I didn't like it, but because it was never used after the nighthawk, and I hated that it just sat in the safe. It was very nicely fit and finished, not a mark or sharp edge on it(unlike the sig which gave me the worst cut I've ever got from a gun, from a slide serration)side by side with the nighthawk the only real difference in fit was the barrel bushing and lockup, and the gap around the grip safety. Very minor differences too. The trigger was decent, crisp and clean. And I'm sure would get even better as time went on. It was nice looking, nice shooting, well finished, and a bit unique with the external extractor and fishscales (dragon scales?). Anyways, nice gun, I'd have another if I was in the market.

Yet, glock are made of plastic and mim parts and are the most durable pistols ever made.

I had a Glock 21 blow up in my hand. It hurt like hell but luckily I kept all my fingers. An unsupported chamber in a plastic gun. I will never do It again. I know people love their glocks but I would trust an all steel Norinco over a glock anyday.

Still a 1911 with plastic parts is unusual, all good 1911 are all steel, try to find a plastic part in a LB an EB or a NH even a R1 or a Ruger, this is the main reason i dont own a STI... A 1911 is not a Glock... JP.

I own two STIs, a Kimber, and an Ed Brown, the STIs have nothing to apologise for. Plastic trigger, read up on why, makes sense. Plastic mainspring housing on my Trojan. What ever, I'd replace it if it bothered me. The STIs are the tightest guns I own, they shoot beautifully and have been flawless.

I have a carbon fibre mountain bike. Plastic. It's cutting edge.

Glock have supported chamber since gen 3 or so, get your facts straight. Blaming the gun for faulty ammo is silly. Ever saw a picture of a 1911 that went kaboom?

I don't know about you guys, but I hate a 1911 with a smooth front strap. I like my Sigs cheese greater like texture on the grip all around, and for that reason only the S&W gets my vote.

I agree with this: from the experiences I have seen the Colt will be a better 1911 of the three. Sig are fine but the "Sig Profile" slide is different enough that holsters and a few other accessories don't fit.

In essence the 1911 platform is 106 years old and on "gen 2" (Gen 1 the 1911A1 and Gen 2 the 1911 Enhanced) while the Glock is 35 years old (model 17) and on "gen 5". I have nothing against Glock other than reserving the ability to say that the 1911 has 71 years on Glock and three less "generations".

Im gonna take a stab at this.
I think the only reason you see a gen 5 Glock is because only Glock makes Glock, and they've got a very large market base that is driving these various generations, along with huge law enforcement contracts driving change.
Everybody's and their dog makes a 1911 so while yes, the true design hasn't much changed in 107 years there's still more variation in 1911's then their ever will be glocks. It just happens to be that their are far more companies manufacturing 1911's "different" from all the other 1911 manufacturers.

Also, I've got a sig 1911 with the traditional rounded slide, and in my opinion it's the cream of the crop. Was never much a fan of the sig profile slides.

Fine.
ill be that one guy.

I say go with the Ruger!

i can only speak from experiance, i have 2 Ruger SR1911's, one full size and one CMD.
both have worked flawless for me and i like the fit and finish of them.
i have only shot one S&W and didn't care for it, like mentioned above my reasons are purely cosmetic, i don't care for the external ejector.
as for the Colt - again like mentioned above i think they are simply a Brand Whore gun.
ive never owned one and all the ones ive checked out have been nothing to write home about.
nothing wrong with them mind you but buying them purely for the name is silly in my book.

if you can go to your LGS and check some of them out.
the Remington R1 Enhanced is a bloody nice gun, if i where going to add another 1911 to my dozen i already own that would be my next one.

this will get some people in here heated, have ya looked a a Kimber?
out of all my 1911's its my favorite.
tight as a drum and is flawless in every way.

i dont competition shoot with it but for what i do it makes me feel like royalty when i go to the range.

on a related note, i had a giggle on the OP.
"loosing my job, looking to buy a new pistol"
the old RCMP forum tracking program must have lit up with red lights when it came across that!!

Hahaha frig, I didn't realize it sounded that bad until you pointed it out. I just want something to treat myself. I'm going to take advantage of all the new found free time and take an accredited online accounting program, so the new pistol is as much a "you hung in until the bitter end" as it is a "congratulations on finally doing something with your life other than working minimum wage dead end jobs"

I can't help much with the OP's choice as I've never shot any of those guns. I can, however, add my recommendation to the STI Trojan. I've had one for nearly 3 years now, shot it quite a lot including some steel matches and and it's been flawless.....tight, accurate and utterly reliable.

I can't speak to the S and W or the Colt but I have had good experience with my Ruger. It has been rock solid reliable so long as you follow the basic 1911 rules. Keep the COAL long, run it wet and clean every 300-400 rounds.

The Rugers have a strong reputation. Most people can't get on board due to Remington's QC issues, but they're missing out. That said, I'd go with one of the new Colts. Lots of quality R and D, and professional input that put a r3al demand on a great piece that works.
