Opinions: AR Brass Catcher

I can't speak for other instructors but when I clear a weapon to enable me to go down range..I want to look right in the breech at an empty chamber & mag well (depending on the weapon).
I won't rely on any kind of device. If I don't see an empty chamber on every weapon on the firing line after the command to unload is given...nobody moves till I do.

If you shoot from a bench - or strictly prone shooting - fine.

However IF you are envoled in any sort of shooting on the move or shooting them moving (like service rifle) they are a safety liability.
One cannot do proper IA drills with them as well.

I can only echo Strikers comments.

I don't know about IA drills (don't know what it means, which suggests that civilians don't do them), but it's easy enough to pop one off the side to show clear when it's time to go downrange and patch or whatever. Indoors, they're a win safetywise, as you have less brass to trip over.

The Velcro-on ones take a couple of extra seconds to get off, still very removable.

Good to know - when my weapon stops firing, I curse and ask the RO for a range alibi so I can do the stage again... apparently your needs are different :) I can see how a brass catcher would be the wrong thing to have in the way if actual bullets are coming at you instead of the IDPA type.

If I'm shooting by myself I'll use one for the reasons stated. However when I'm running a range at work..I don't use them.
If I had 360 degree vison and could reach from one end of the firing line to the other to ##### slap anyone who is waving their muzzle all over the place trying to remove it..I'd consider it!
