Opinions for a new rifle/cartridge

I'm looking for a new rifle for range practice and deer hunting. I've already got a 300WM and I'm not really interested in another 30 cal so I was thinking of something from 6mm to 7mm. Hunting will be done here in SK in dense bush to open country. A 270 is a good choice, albeit a common one and I was thinking of a 7RM but that's tripping on the heels of the 300.

I'm just looking for something with a little less blast than the 300 and something that would compliment it well. (I'm trying to be a minimalist with my rifle collection but I'm being very indecisive about it! ;) ).

I'm also deciding on what rifle which is going to be a bolt action with a 22 or 24" barrel for under $1000 new or used. I prefer wood/blue but I know S/S are a reasonable and popular choice.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Have a look at a .243, 7mm-08, one of the mid calibres(.257, .260, .280 etc), one of the short magnums. You may want to consider a totally different action too. A single shot for exampe.

x2 25-06

with a .22 CF and a .300 WM you would have all but the really big stuff covered.

The .25-06Rem really is better than the .270Win and somewhat less common, as that seems to be one of your criterion.;) :)

25-06, 257 Roberts, 7mm-08...I like those choices. I'll have to get more info about them.

Sunray, I just sold a Ruger No.1 in 7mmRM yesterday. Fine rifle; I really enjoyed it but I prefer a bolt action for a deer hunting rifle.

243, 25-06 or 270 are all good choice for deer. The muzzleblast will be reduced considerably from your 300. As for the brand of rifle, you should go to the gunshop and handle a few to see which one your prefer. Browning, Tikka, Remington, Savage, Weatherby Vanguard and Ruger. Handle them all and one will feel better to you in your hands.

I didn't want it to come across that way...just poor wording on my part. If you think a 270 is the cat's ass then I'd rather you recommend a 270. ;)

Although I'm a diehard .30 cal fan, three numbers come to mind:
.243
25-06
6.5 X 55

These are all nice, mild recoil, caribou rounds and would work equally well on deer.

Muzzle blast and recoil are certainly important factors. If I could do everything with the 300 more comfortably and with less expensive I'd be happy but there's a trade off for the extra power.

I was a little biased towards the 25-06 and 270 before I started the thread but I'm really surprised at all the 25-06 recommendations.

My choices would be a 25-06 in a 700 CDL for a full size rifle,
or if you're thinking something a little more compact, a .260 in the
new Model 7 CDL.

Either way, I'd hang a Leupold VxII 2-7 on 'em. Hold out for
the LR reticle ... # 61270.

I was just kidding around. I have never hunted w/ .270, but I have been real happy with the performance of the .25. Not much difference really, as far as deer goes. Whats 20 thousandths of an inch to a deer.:)

As a bonus, the 25-06 is pure murder on coyotes and wolves.

Lots of good recommendations......... have fun shopping.

if you dont reload and like detachable magazines, the Remington 700 mountain rifle DM in 7-08

if you handload, try the 260

if you dont like DM, look at a Remington 700 CDL in 7-08

basically a heavier model of the mtn rifle, with a longer tube

and then there is the more compact Model Seven CDL, in 7-08

that's what I can reccomend
