Lots of good suggestions; thanks!

Regarding handloading, no, I don't. That was the first thing I had to decide: Either buy handloading equipment or buy a new rifle and get involved in handloading next year when I'll be a lot more "settled". Right now it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to get started.

I suppose a quick way to narrow things down is to choose short/fat or long/skinny. ;)

like I mentioned, if you dont handload, you're better off going with a 7-08 over a 260. Only four factory loads available for the 260, compared to a dozen or more for the 7-08.

If you can get by for a year or so on the four factory loads for the 260, Id reccomend going that route, as it is one kick ass little cartridge that is super impressive, both at the range, and in the field. Lightning on deer I tell ya

I'm a big .270 fan, but why not try a Winchester Featherweight in 6.5 x 55 Swede, very nice little deer gun, and if you do get tired of it, you won't be hard pressed to sell it.

A few years ago I wanted a 7-08 in the worst way...until I saw the 260. Looks like an awesome cartridge, but like you say, not many factory loads.

I ended up using a 284 Win which is great but only has one factory load and a 6.5 Swede (which is also great) but finding the hotter factory loads can be a pain. I really need to start reloading. ;)

Federeal Premium Nosler Partition in 7x57 is the sweetest load for a great calibre. Easy to find and plentyfull choices of ammo are availible. Ruger, Winchester, CZ, and Tikka all make rifles in this application, and in your price range too. If not that then maybe a 260 Rem, or 7mm-08 Rem are fine choices to. Good luck!

I think one of the quarter bores would be a great choice for your hunting.
.257 Roberts, .25-06, .257 Ackley, 25WSSM. or a .257WTBY.
Most of them will shoot .75 grain bullets at 3900fps or 120's at 3000fps. Just what the doctor ordered for coyotes to deer. I like the 110 grain accubond at about 3200fps from the super short!

I never gave 257's much thought until I started this thread. I like (and have owned) 264's but I drew a definite line in my mind that a quarter bore was borderline for Mulies and Whitetails and not worth considering. (I think my impression was that the itty bitty pills wouldn't penetrate overly well.)

The 25-06 looks like a good one as does the 25WSSM...but I only "discovered" it 15 minutes ago. :p
