I have been wanting to build a heavy barrel bolt action in 223. The Remy 700 seems like a decent place to start.

- Mostly paper but will hit the prairie occasionally for some gophers etc.
- Mostly shooting at 100m but occasionally I will play around up to 300m.
- Mostly shoot bulk 55g AE223.
- I would like achievable 1" groups at 100m but also know the limitations bulk ammo combined with my shooting skills provide.

Wondering what the opinion is on the 16.5" barrel on the SPS tactical for this type of playing. Thought about bedding it into a different stock and installing a brake.

Thoughts? Waste of time / money for a short barreled bolt?

Just an opinion...I broke 50 today so I feel like spouting off...

Time to start reloading. It's the only way to get the most out of your rifle at a reasonable price.

I wouldn't bother with the brake, unless your making a fashion statement. .223 isn't exactly a heavy hitter, so unless your looking to watch the prairie dogs explode I'd consider that a waste.

You'll get more out of a longer barrel. I personally wouldn't go with anything shorter than 20" (26"-28" 1 in 7 or 8 is my pref), but it's your rifle.

I don't know why you would want or need a break on a 223. 223 doesn't kick at all and breaks are obnoxiously loud.

As for the 16.5" barrel it will be fine out to 300 (and further). You should easily be able to get tight groups at a 100m with decent ammo. You may have the odd flyer, but generally, 700s group fine if the shooter does their part. I think those 16.5" rifles are the smartest move Remington has made in a long time. I wish they made stainless ones.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had considered the brake being a waste, just thought about not wasting the threads already there :)

And Red - opinions are exactly what I am looking for so please spout away ;) and happy birthday.

Thanks!

I had an SPS Tac. I've heard lots of complaints about the stock and the bolt felt like it was closing on sand. That said, I liked the rifle in spite of the flex in the stock and the liberal coat of Parkerizing on the bolt. I was getting 3/4 moa at 100 yds with 69gr Matchkings and 60gr HP with Varget powder. It was a decent rifle for the price.

If you want to shoot gophers brakes are awesome because they allow you to spot your shoots and see the gophers explode through the scope.

I wouldn't bother bedding or switching out stocks if you are only going to run bulk or surplus ammo. The ammo will be the weak link, 1 inch groupbwill be achiveable with bulk ammo, but you will get the odd flyer. Bed the stock, reload, tweak the trigger and the groups will shrink.

If you always plan to keep it under 500 yards the 16.5 will do fine. I usee to shoot service rifle with a 14.5" AR and 68 grain match bullets at 2600 fps. Worked great to 500, but longer than that and you will want a heavier bullet pushed faster.
